Fall and winter are a great time of year to harvest basketry materials. We had a wonderful time walking around Penland’s campus with @flagmountain.studio with an eye for making baskets. She showed us how to identify some exciting plants that she uses in her beautiful work. Angela was a visiting artist during @abcoddington ’s recent sculptural basketry concentration. She also taught a workshop last summer. What are you harvesting this time of year, basket friends?

This past Saturday I taught a multi-craft class with my super rad pal Becky Juliette at @woodcrestfarmnc making fireplace brooms! We started in the forge making handles, then Becky led everyone in tying on a broom head. We didn't even plan to wear matching black overalls. Feeling grateful for my crafty friends and for students who are psyched on making things!

Another delightful group of backpack baskets from this weekend's class at @triplespringstudios ! This class is always a marathon to complete in just two days, and this group of mostly first-time weavers knocked it out of the park, weaving into the dark yesterday to finish their baskets :)

We still have some spots left in Intro to Basketweaving class with @flagmountain.studio (Angela Eastman), starting this coming Tuesday! Tuesdays, 6-9pm, October 15-November 19 For those interested in working with natural materials, traditional weaving techniques, and the therapeutic qualities of working with your hands. Students will weave three baskets while learning techniques for bases, patterns, and borders. This is an introductory class and a space where students with previous experience can practice their technique. About the Instructor: Angela Eastman is an artist and teacher from Hillsborough, North Carolina. She holds an MFA in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art and completed the Core Fellowship program at Penland School of Crafts, and has participated in numerous residencies, including at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (ME), the John C. Campbell Folk School (NC), the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts (GA), MASS MoCA (MA), Vermont Studio Center (VT), the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild (NY), Sitka Center for Art and Ecology (OR), Talking Dolls (MI), the Ragdale Foundation (IL), and SIM and Nes residencies in Iceland. In addition to sculptural work, Angela creates jewelry, baskets, furniture, and other home goods through her design business Flag Mountain Studio.
