Fitzbrien year 4 is well underway. Lots has changed, but the core principles are exactly the same. We are still dedicated to finding new and interesting ways to tell stories about art & design. We are still committed to working collaboratively with artists and institutions (+ publications, labels & brands!) to make interesting, complex films. We are still the same team we were when we started out 4 years ago. But now we know commercials, we know concert films, we know extreme locations and we know long-form. It’s been an exciting time of late. In September last year, visual artist Boris Acket (@boris.acket ) unveiled a new installation at DJ Fred again..’s (@fredagainagainagainagainagain ) USB002 live show series, touring across ten cities globally in ten weeks. The installation features a large suspended sheet of fabric which floats above the audience like a transparent, breathing roof. Throughout the concert, the sculpture wafts and moves across the audience, creating smaller and larger spaces, static spatial gestures, storms, and water surfaces. According to Acket, the installation functioned as a “kinetic architectural form, shaping the atmosphere of the space in real time. It responded intuitively to the energy of the night - contracting and expanding, shifting between stillness and turbulence, evoking storms, rippling water, and moments of calm.” This film captures the interplay between design and live music, plus the collaborative dialogue between Boris and Fred. I have not counted, but I think I’ve interviewed almost 100 artists and architects since I started making films. Amongst those, I can’t remember being much more excited beforehand than I was when travelling to quiz Sir Norman Foster last summer. For someone growing up in the UK, Foster’s architecture is unavoidable. Most of us know at least a dozen of his buildings whether we realise they are his or not. Wembley, Stansted, The Gherkin, London City Hall, British Museum Forecourt, Millennium Bridge and OVO Hydro to name a few. Never mind the Reichstag, Camp Nou, Bernabeu et al. Sir Norman had recently turned 90 when we sat down together on a baking hot Madrid day, but he appears to be blessed with access to an unlimited reserve of energy. Sharp, kind and patient, as well as very very busy. In addition to the task at hand - discussing the @porsche collaboration with @normanfosterfdn I got to ask him about Buckminster Fuller and the new Manchester United stadium. It was wicked. Loved the slowly-rotating model of one of Buckminster Fuller’s iconic domes in the background. I liked the idea of Bucky being just over his shoulder somewhere.
