Richter Revisited
Richter’s product design emerges from a broader project: the synthesis of art, architecture, and society. Central to this vision was his insistence on the systematic implementation of design as a connective tissue between avant-garde experimentation and everyday life. To that end, Richter played a pivotal role across a spectrum of initiatives spanning education, publishing, exhibitions, and institutional frameworks. His products were consistently conceived for specific projects, rarely entering public circulation; for the most part, they became known only through mediated images, gradually acquiring an almost mythic status.
Since none of Richter’s product designs entered serial production, and some have not survived at all, the process of redesign demanded a form of forensic reconstruction, drawing on sketches, photographs, and other archival materials. In this context, Neisako, Grupa, and Numen / For Use sought to approximate Richter’s mode of thinking as closely as possible, while simultaneously advancing the objects to the highest attainable level of technical and ergonomic refinement. The central challenge lay in calibrating an appropriate balance between the originals, largely existing at the level of prototypes, and their contemporary iterations. Within this collective endeavor, the designers encountered a distinct mode of creativity, one that operates in the charged space between evidence and speculation.

"The new methodology placed more emphasis on the process than on the result, focussing on experiment rather than revelation, allowing bastardisations and overlapping of fields of activity, creating context where a chair can become a leitmotif for stage design, where objects expand into architecture and scenography turns into an installation. This disciplinary intermeshing, this interstitial space that opened between design, scenography, architecture and art became a great new playground for testing out singular methods on the expanding substratum of different media."
