After spending a year @14henriettastreet - looking back at her time there, Fiona Harrington held an exhibition of her work in the final days of her time there exploring the connections between the house, its history and traditional Irish lace
By repositioning these (very important to preserve) lace making techniques through contemporary visual art, her work which was dotted around the house before being shown in this dedicated space connected history, objects and memory
From being inspired by the Japanese art of ‘kitsuge’ to the stories behind work titles such as ‘Met Éireann’ and ‘Hoping to Find You in the Best of Health’, her teacup Irish needle lace pieces featured even a portrait of Peter Brannigan - who was born at 14 Henrietta St.
A delicate yet powerful homage to a layered building…congratulations Fiona 👏

And a visit to 14 Henrietta St. to see Fiona Harrimgton's exhibition! It was fantastic to finally see Fiona in situ, after watching from afar for the last year or so!
We received this prestigious award in the category of Citizen’s Engagement and Awareness-raising, in recognition of our people-first approach.
There are lots of ways we do this, by working with artists. We invite them to spend time in the museum exploring the building, its collection, and the stories of the people who lived here. This process brings fresh perspectives and offers visitors new ways to connect with the social history of Dublin.
Fiona spent a year researching the history, architecture, and stories of 14 Henrietta Street. She responded to the building’s rooms, objects, and histories through traditional Irish needle and bobbin lace techniques.

Two new Visual Artists in Residence at DCU!
We are excited to announce two talented new Visual Artists in Residence for the 2026/27 academic year. In partnership with Fire Station Artists’ Studios, DCU is thrilled to welcome Julie Merriman and Fiona Harrington, who will join the university’s creative community for a year-long residency based at the All Hallows Campus.
This residency, a well-established collaboration between DCU and FSAS, offers professional artists the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the university’s academic and research environment. The programme fosters a dynamic exchange of ideas, allowing artists to contribute to the cultural life of the university while drawing inspiration from its cutting-edge research.

Julie Merriman is a visual artist whose work delves into present-day and historical data to explore themes of inscription, replication, and transmission. During her residency at DCU, Julie will focus on the intersections of her artistic practice with DCU’s research strengths, particularly in areas like Air Traffic Control, Sustainability, and Aviation Management. Collaborating with the Aviation Leadership programme, Julie will create new works that reflect the complex and evolving landscape of these fields.
Fiona Harrington, a seasoned visual artist and educator, brings over 20 years of experience to the residency. Known for her mastery of traditional Irish lacemaking, Fiona’s work has been showcased both nationally and internationally. During her time at DCU, Fiona plans to develop new sculptural works and a significant publication on Irish lace, a craft she holds dear. Her residency will also include arts-education-focused initiatives, creating opportunities for creative exchange and collaboration across the university community. Fiona’s deep commitment to the preservation and innovation of traditional crafts, combined with her passion for arts education, will enrich the creative atmosphere at DCU.
