So excited to announce ‘TAPSEI’, my first ever solo exhibition, which will be held on the GVB ferry Amsterdam Central Station. Running September 29th - November 29th in collaboration with @foam_amsterdam@amsterdamferryfestival@square.amsterdam . This exhibition serves as a contemporary response to the historical exhibition Yere Mi Sten by Augusta Curiel.⠀

My work draws on memory, spirituality, and imagination, deeply rooted in the Afro-Caribbean and Indigenous experience. With these analogue portraits, I explore feelings of nostalgia and belonging. In this exhibition, I portray the Surinamese Amazon and its people in moments of quiet intimacy. These portraits are closely connected to the everyday, from a perspective grounded in lived experience. ‘Tapsei’ is a word from Sranantongo that literally means ‘upwards’. In the context of Suriname’s interior, it also refers to a way of orienting oneself, navigation through landscape, memory, and community. In everyday usage, ‘tapsei’ is also commonly used as a term for the Surinamese interior itself.

Shot for Issue 05: Desire! Desire! Desire!, Wan Pipel is a portrait of Suriname shaped by Indigenous, African, Indian, Javanese, Chinese, and European histories living across faith, culture, and land, and the tension of what comes next as oil wealth, diasporic return, and the long shadow of colonialism begin to reshape its future
