“We hope that they won’t take us...I brought my two sons here and I’m just trying to make them good men and provide back into this country. We’re just all praying.” Jackson Heights, Queens is home to vibrant South Asian and Latine immigrant communities in New York City. There, the question, “What are you afraid of right now?” garners different yet illuminating answers — answers that speak to the limitations of home surveillance devices like Ring cameras. What happens when these cameras contribute to immigrants’ fears right now? Listen to the full story at the link in our bio.

There are companies operating under a business model in which your data is the product, one that rakes in tens of millions of dollars annually. Words by Narimes Parakul “Portland is extra special to Flock.”  “It sounds like now is the right moment to bring life-saving technology to Portland PD.”  “You and the other folks in Portland are ‘special children,’ and we are motivated to get you some wins and bring this life-saving technology to your jurisdiction. Thus, I am not much concerned about limiting the timeframe of your full nationwide access.”  These are just some of the email messages Flock Safety sent to the Portland Police Bureau between July and October 2025. Flock was hoping to gain a new customer in the bureau — Oregon’s largest law enforcement agency — and their sales pitch was unrelenting. Flock Safety was founded in 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia, with a mission to “eliminate crime.” One of their biggest sellers is automatic license plate readers (ALPRs): AI-powered, high-speed cameras that automatically capture the license plate, make, and model of cars driving past them.  Read our latest story at with the #linkinbio or at /yv6fdv4h #flocksafety #data #Portland #tech

“This isn’t about dogs. This is about catching people. This is about catching and snatching.” Government agencies, law enforcement, and retail businesses are increasingly making use of surveillance technologies like license plate readers to monitor and track members of the public. While privacy rights advocates critique the way these institutions can abuse the data they’re collecting, some individuals opt to use these technologies in their own homes. Producer @theahmedashour explores the relationship between immigrants and consumer home surveillance devices like Ring cameras. Do immigrants feel that these technologies keep them safe? And how have attitudes towards these devices changed in recent years? Listen to the full story at the link in our bio. Our investigation uncovered the existence of a data broker loophole that threatens sanctuary protections for immigrants in Portland, Oregon. Data collected by Portland police — including scans from license plate readers across the city — is accessible to federal immigration authorities. Support our work at the #linkinbio.

A New Data Privacy Law In Montana Aims to Protect Everyone Regardless of Status Words by Narimes Parakul Immigrants and the January 6 Capitol insurrectionists may not appear to share much in common — except what they stand to gain from a new law introduced by one of Montana’s state senators, Republican Daniel Emrich. At least nine Montanans were involved in the 2021 insurrection, including Stewart Rhodes, the founder of the Oath Keepers, a far-right anti-government militia. Among the 1,500 people arrested for the attack was Patrick William O’Brien, a father who drove for three days with his son to the Capitol. Sen. Emrich says he knows O’Brien, a Montanan from Great Falls, personally. Both Rhodes and O’Brien were later pardoned by President Donald Trump. Five years after insurrectionists stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, Emrich is still reflecting on its impact. But he’s not thinking about destruction of federal property or physical assaults on police officers. What bothers him the most is the breach of rioters’ personal data. “It’s the same as if someone walked into your house and decided that they were going to search your house without a search warrant,” Emrich says. A spokesperson for the Oregon Department of Transportation told Feet in 2 Worlds that part of the revenue it collects from sharing driver data goes toward the State Highway Fund, while the rest goes to covering the costs of providing electronic records and operating the state web portal. No Privacy in Private: Immigrant Domestic Workers Are Being Recorded On the Job Words by Narimes Parakul Illustrations by Dabin Han Felicia, a 51-year-old nanny, is certain she’s being secretly recorded. When she returns to her employers’ New York home after a trip around town with their toddler, the parents bring up something she spoke about while at the playground. And when she takes another family’s preschooler to a playdate on a different day, these same concerns remain. The other parents also bring up something she talked about earlier. “Sometimes it happens right as you get in [to the home],” says Felicia. “So it’s not like a child will have enough time to go and say something to the parents.” She’s not alone in her suspicions. “When I speak about it, surprisingly, there are so many nannies that have experienced the same,” says Felicia. “This has been something that’s very common now. We know what’s going on.” Read our latest story with the #linkinbio or at /ymvmuvb6 #immigrants #Privacy #technology #workplace
