I had so much fun photographing and getting to know @lapaushi , @bint.bandora , and ZoĆ« Gamell Brown for @portlandincolor ās new spring feature interviews š±
Weāre partnering with the artists and @portland5_culturecommunity for a gallery show opening tonight 4/23 from 6-8pm and running through May 10thā itās got a mix of my portraits, excerpts from @jenperrr and @basic.blaec.girl ās interviews, and original work from the artists themselves. The written interviews are live on @portlandincolor and film interviews coming soon from the best @makerchamp
Thank you to @portland5_culturecommunity@regionalarts@portlandeventsandfilmoffice for making this work possible in a world where weāre seeing less and less support for the arts.
As a Very Tired Person, itās been energizing and nourishing to continue this work (and wild to think I did the first PIC features 9 years ago!) A sweet reminder of why we made Portland our home š¤
Excited that this photo from Overland, Overseas was chosen to be part of this yearās @american_photography_winners ā thank you to @diversifyphoto for partnering to give access to community members like me.
Today, an estimated 15 million Filipinos live outside of the Pacific archipelago. Many are overseas workers, and even more are the descendants whose ancestors left the motherlandā for opportunity, for survival, or for a new start. After centuries of colonization and a continued battle for the autonomy of a peaceful homeland, Filipinos find themselves all over the world making a home where they might never have imagined.

30 years ago, we sat at this beach as our sister explained our mom had been taken, and we didnāt know when sheād be back
I canāt tell you what itās like to fully dive into the ocean of my familyās migration, tracing the edges of all the times we dared to hope
When all the while, we see today that nothing has changed
The men in masks today as cowardly as the man who came to our door
Asking an 8 year old boy if his mother was home
As cowardly as the man who dropped us off at school, to go on like nothing had changed
As cowardly as the man who brought Liam to his own front door, bait for his own family inside
As cowardly as the country that allows this
Is founded on this
The separation of families
The delusion of morality
As I dive into my own memory, bemoaning
photos lost, what I canāt remember
I think of Liam and hope
he can erase this from his memory, too
A photo of the worst moment of his life
Bright across our screens
A literal poster child of devastation
I wish we didnāt know his face
That it didnāt take the blue of his hat, the uncertainty in his eyes
to wake up
That we always wait for the cruelest
Moments of our humanity to remind us to change
To hold our breath for better
The longsuffering work of undoing what canāt be undone
