Traveling like a local is our favorite way to explore new places, so I love sharing my recommendations with friends and visitors coming to Portland. Somehow, it’s been home for the last 12 years and we’re still finding gems all the time. I had so much fun photographing and getting to know @lapaushi , @bint.bandora , and Zoë Gamell Brown for @portlandincolor ’s new spring feature interviews 🌱 We’re partnering with the artists and @portland5_culturecommunity for a gallery show opening tonight 4/23 from 6-8pm and running through May 10th— it’s got a mix of my portraits, excerpts from @jenperrr and @basic.blaec.girl ’s interviews, and original work from the artists themselves. Celeste Noche (@extracelestial ) is a Filipino American documentary and editorial photographer whose work spans food, travel and portraiture. During her time at Vashon Artist Residency, Celeste has been working on writing and sequencing a new photobook memoir. Rooted in narrative storytelling, her work explores identity, culture and access across communities. Her photographs have appeared in leading international and national publications, including The New York Times, National Geographic Traveller UK, BBC, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, Food & Wine, Bon Appétit and Travel + Leisure, among others. Celeste’s awards include funding from the Oregon Arts Commission and Regional Arts and Culture Council. She has completed artist residencies in Italy, Scotland, and the Oregon Coast, with a forthcoming Interlude Artist in Residence in New York. She is a member of Authority Collective, Diversify Photo and Women Photograph - and the founder of Portland in Color, an initiative uplifting BIPOC artists in the Pacific Northwest. She holds a BA from Stanford University and is based in Portland, Oregon and San Francisco, California. 30 years ago, we sat at this beach as our sister explained our mom had been taken, and we didn’t know when she’d be back I can’t tell you what it’s like to fully dive into the ocean of my family’s migration, tracing the edges of all the times we dared to hope When all the while, we see today that nothing has changed The men in masks today as cowardly as the man who came to our door Asking an 8 year old boy if his mother was home As cowardly as the man who dropped us off at school, to go on like nothing had changed As cowardly as the man who brought Liam to his own front door, bait for his own family inside As cowardly as the country that allows this Is founded on this The separation of families The delusion of morality As I dive into my own memory, bemoaning photos lost, what I can’t remember I think of Liam and hope he can erase this from his memory, too A photo of the worst moment of his life Bright across our screens A literal poster child of devastation I wish we didn’t know his face That it didn’t take the blue of his hat, the uncertainty in his eyes to wake up That we always wait for the cruelest Moments of our humanity to remind us to change To hold our breath for better The longsuffering work of undoing what can’t be undone // Thank you to @comadreculture , @amandalitm , @wendymac , @krime_1 , @margaretkilljoy , @chiara.acu , and @joandidion for your words and work ❤️‍🔥
