I remember starting out in the film music world. At the time I was feeling that imposter syndrome a familiar feeling to most of us. It’s never easy trying to find the balance between serving the audience and the art while still making something authentic…But standing on the podium in front of 52 world-class players, there’s this profound sense of belonging. A chance to own every part of my musical self @jacobyoffee and I got to record at the iconic John Williams scoring stage home to many of the greatest film scores of all time with some of the best players in the world. Recording music we wrote for our upcoming project 💪🏾Thanks to @peterrottermusic and @encompassmusic as well as all our incredible musicians. A fair licensed ecosystem where artists and creators are paid for what they contribute. This is what a healthy collaboration between ai platform and artists actually looks like. It’s the only future I’m interested in building. Bad news: The most important conversations about AI are happening in private rooms, not shared spaces. Better news: They’re happening. And I wrote about one of them. I’m imagining 2040 looking back at this period and shaking its collective head over Hollywood’s failure to honestly reckon with AI even as it was already in force. And by reckon, I don’t mean “stop it.” I mean to size it, experiment, consider its possibilities, get excited AND recognize the potential fallout, all without rancor or blame. But even as I type that I think, ”how impossible.” Any topic that shifts the locus of power probably is not gonna lend itself to measured dialogue. I get backlash every time I write about AI. Probably this time, too; fine. I wanted to celebrate @fbthemastermind and @kingwillonius for creating the space and committing to more. And Diana Williams for the invite, @judene.small and a16z Cultural Leadership Fund for the support, and everyone I met that night. Looking forward to continuing the conversation. Don’t let the silence from professional musicians, artists, and creators fool you. A lot of pros are already using AI somewhere in their creative process or trying to figure out the process without compromising their art. The real question is not whether AI is being used. The question is how. Last week at the @televisionacad AI Summit, I demonstrated what that can look like inside a professional scoring workflow. Live performance. AI processing. Live performance again. What I call the creative sandwich: Human intention on the input ➡️AI systems in the middle ➡️Human judgment on the output. The human frames the work. The machine proposes. The composer disposes. This structure keeps authorship where it belongs with the practitioner while ensuring the tool never replaces the creative decision. Each creator’s workflow becomes unique to their instincts, not the defaults of the system. Less AI slop. More human direction. This is the conversation @MastersvsMachine exists to build. Creators, technologists, and institutions sitting in the same room while the future of authorship is still being shaped. There’s a simple beauty in having no agenda. Just pointing in a direction and not worrying about what might get in the way. I drove for my birthday without knowing exactly where I’d end up. In the middle of the noise apocalypse headlines, AI overload, creative pressure, the constant push to learn more and explain everything… it felt good to do nothing at all. The greatest gift I could give myself was stillness. With a few extras from some artists who understood this long before me. Two of those gifts: I. “The answer is to be so still that the questions stop.” II. Art is love in creation, and love is an art created. Roahn Hylton is a Houston born composer and producer known for shaping chart topping hits and scoring major film and television projects. His credits include co producing Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass,” producing records for Ariana Grande and Keyshia Cole, and composing for series and documentaries across Netflix, Amazon, ABC, and Peacock. Beyond the studio, Hylton is a leader in the music community. He serves on the board of SONA, chairs the Songwriters and Composers Committee for the GRAMMYs Los Angeles Chapter, and sits on the Television Academy’s Music Peer Group Executive Committee.
