TRIAL AND ERROR : PAVILION WITH A
HANGING ROOF
FABIO DON presents the PAVILION WITH A HANGING ROOF, a spatial installation originally conceived for the Zurich University of the Arts and developed with artist Florian Dombois.
Despite lacking a specific function, its light and quick-to-assemble structure allows it to be implemented in different places.
Given the pneumatic structure chosen for its realization, it became clear to its authors that the roof element would be something difficult to control in geometric terms, as it would react to weather conditions, altitude, and eventually deform due to its own weight.
In 2022 the pavilion was installed in Zuoz during Engadin Art Talk, on an occasion by the collective U5, when an unexpected gust of wind caused the pneumatic structure to collapse, turning it into a giant soft cushion.

Plattenbau (German for “slab construction”) is a lounge chair we designed in 2022.
The concept was to make an armchair using a single material and as few elements as possible.
The elements are neither glued nor screwed, but held together by interlocking only, which serves to ensure the structural stability of the whole. The lounge chair is basically composed of only three elements: 3 vertical elements (back, armrests) and the horizontal one (seat).

A Building of Buildings. Back in 2020 for the non-governmental organization 'Architektūros fondas' we had the opportunity to reflect on the relationship between the permanence of a structure and its content.
«There is a drawing that communicates an idea quite clearly. It is a drawing taken from the American weekly magazine "Life" in an issue of 1909 and that in 1978, has been republished by Rem Koolhaas in his famous volume "Delirious New York". In this drawing are represented very typical detached houses with sloping roofs, perhaps single-family houses, of those that can be seen everywhere. The houses are all different and all individual, almost to show the character and personality of those who live in them. All of them even have a garden planted to complement. The particularity of the design is that these houses are not juxtaposed side to side in a horizontal sense but are stacked vertically. Rem Koolhaas will use it in his argument because it provided a reference point for „The High Life“ concept. In the caption at the foot of the illustration we read: „1909 theorem: the Skyscraper as utopian device for the production of unlimited numbers of virgin sites on a single metropolitan location“. But this is not the aspect that fascinates us in this illustration. What fascinates us is the presence, the strong presence of the load-bearing structure that allows the single-family houses to be stacked. It goes without saying that in the illustration the single house is only a metaphor of what the structure will make possible: the maximal customization and individualization of its inhabitant.»
A few weeks ago I had the privilege of performing some spatial experiments on a selection of raw building materials with a fantastic group of performers, under the direction of and in collaboration with artist Maja Renn (@maja.renn ) as part of a residency at the Tanzhaus Zurich (@tanzhauszuerich ). An image of our final installation at @iuav_wave workshop that we led at the IUAV University of Venice last summer.
The goal of this workshop and research, was to projectively define and spatially produce some devices that can integrate within them different and multiple programmatic instances, ranging from the concept of dwelling, to that of work, to that of teaching and learning, ultimately targeting the notion of „Diffuse Campus“ with the aim of achieving an 1:1 scale and thus the production of a real space and device.

This summer we had the honor of leading one of the Workshops @iuav_wave at the IUAV University of Venice.
The theme proposed by @iuav_venezia for this edition of the summer school was that of the future of the university campus.
Starting from the proposed theme, we introduced and elaborated on the concept of "Widespread Campus“, through also the experiences and works of architects like Ken Isaacs in his project „Knowledge Box“ & his publication "Living Structures“ and like Joe Colombo with his „Total Furnishing Unit“, developing further their concept of „Device“, as an element that can accommodate within it multiple and heterogeneous instances.
Design Indeterminacy - Structure & Device is a publication created by graphic designer @andreasaccavini with typeface by @giovanni_murolo collecting 16 final projects produced by the students during the summer school.
