The 2026 edition of @sound_arguments starts soon. Over twenty sound makers, working across multiple fields and practices, will come together over the next four months in our programme. Let’s meet them! Raphaël Belfiore @raphaelbelfiore is a composer whose music has been presented in several European countries in a wide range of formats, including instrumental works for soloists and ensembles, performances, multimedia pieces, installations, exhibitions, publications, and text- and graphic scores. At the core of his practice lies an interest in the relationship between music and thought, and in how music can be understood as a way of thinking in its own right. Rather than considering composition as the mere organization of sounds or as the implementation of ideas, his works seek to join both in a continuous gesture operating across multiple layers of a musical work. His recent interests focus on diagrams and diagrammatic thought as tools to organize mediations between the concrete and the abstract, and between theory and practice. Alongside his work as a composer, Raphaël Belfiore is active as a singer, writer, and teacher. With a background in philosophy and musicology, he studied composition and currently studies classical singing at the Hochschule für Music Basel, and is finishing a diploma at the New Center for Research and Practice. These parallel activities inform his artistic work as a whole and contribute to a transversal approach to music that encompasses composition, interpretation, critical reflection, writing, and pedagogy. This post looks back at a post by @kalun_____ Kalun Leung on the 2025 Kranichstein Music Prize at Darmstadt (/p/DM-cvagRbzJ), taking it as a point of departure rather than an object of direct rebuttal. Instead of responding to specific claims or institutional decisions, it steps back to reflect on some of the assumptions currently shaping debates around composer-performers, music-as-text, and music-as-performance. In particular, it questions the tendency to oppose text and performance, or to treat the fusion of roles as a solution to inherited hierarchies, by examining the role of mediation and symbolic systems in composing, performing, and improvising. The text does not seek to dismiss performance-based, collaborative, or context-specific practices, nor to defend score-centric models. Rather, it aims to clarify how different musical roles and practices remain structurally distinct, even when they are assumed by the same person, and how forms of textuality continue to operate across them. Ultimately, the intention is to slow down some of the narratives of immediacy, authenticity, and horizontality that circulate in contemporary discourse, and to reopen a space for thinking about mediation, reflection, and transformation in musical practice. About the last weeks of my paleo-anthropo-platonico-gnostico-geometrico-artistic reading retreat in Egypt: The reading turned out to be more accidented than planned — a lot of André Leroi-Gourhan and Gilles Châtelet, the biography of Jean Cavaillès, a site-specific digression into the Gnostics of Alexandria, endless Robert Musil, a fascinating study on Paul Natorp’s interpretation of Platonic idealism, and Horst Bredekamp on Darwin’s diagrammatic practice. Along the way I also sketched out ideas for future pieces, and made friends with a few local creatures. These weeks have been intense and very fruitful. Thanks to the city of Basel for making this possible.

A little post about the first two weeks of a six-week mathematico-diagrammatico-semiotico-categorico-musical reading retreat in Egypt, trying to focus as much as possible. Here are some moments from my parallel wanderings on land and texts — with company from Charles Sanders Peirce, Gilles Châtelet, Guerino Mazzola, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Sybille Krämer, Frederik Stjernfelt, among others. Evenings have been with Robert Musil, whose pages (with qualities) turned out to be more relevant than expected. What it’s all for comes through a bit more in my recent essay for @postmusicpost The next two weeks, I think I’ll focus on gestures with André Leroi-Gourhan, Vilém Flusser, and additional Gilles Châtelet. I think I’m slowly reaching my reading cruising speed…
