for reasons i can’t begin to fathom, i never did one of these for eye level number 63. that’s like not issuing a baseball card for a player in the starting lineup. anyway, the show closes this weekend (along with all the other stuff happening this weekend). it’s @datzstevesart at @novadogallery , and the review is here: /post/steve-datz-the-consistency-of-inconsistency if you’re in jc for the magic flute at harborside, novado gallery is nearby. if you’re coming to the event at nimbus tomorrow night, novado gallery is right around the corner! 110 morgan st.

eye level 64 takes the temperature of jersey city galleries and finds them insufficiently sultry. it’s also a review of a good counterexample: “she’s like the wind,” a pretty hot show at @deepspacejc . artists mentioned include @ameliamaryshields , @sherlyfanstudio , @kaira.villanueva , @lilahray , @gigichen.art , @leighcunninghamstudio , @sgmoney , @frankiebinx , @cortneyherron , @shamaramics , and there’s other intriguing stuff in the show, too. you should read this one. /post/she-s-like-the-wind

Every year, I make a list of my favorite art shows for @jerseycitytimes . It’s only March, but I’ll be pretty shocked if this one doesn’t make it on there. Eye Level 62 is a look at a provocative, charming, unsettling solo show from the very clever @winifredmcneillstudio . It’s at @njcugalleries . Here’s the link for people who, like me, like links (it’s also in the bio). /post/winifred-mcneill-between-air-and-earth

what are you up to tonight? why not pray for peace at @eontaspace (34 dekalb)? the two shows on view there — “the 16th,” a commemoration of the anniversary of the fukushima daiichi disaster, and “handle with care,” a collection of works made with fragile materials, are the subject of the anxious eye level number 61. if you have what it takes to cut and paste, read it at the following link: /post/the-16th-handle-with-care

*eye level* returns from winter hibernation with a review of “home here,” a group show at @njcugalleries . curated by @lucyrovetto and containing work by @manecatin , @constructed_ephemera , @jazgraf , @nicole_demaio , @patlaystudio , @jrobertsstudio , others; @stephromanoart isn’t in this show, but i feel like it’s continuous with her winter exhibition at njcu, so she’s mentioned in this piece, too. i also give a quick overview of the current predicament we face as people who live and create in jersey city (and america). this is eye level #59, and more will follow soon, so keep watching this space. direct link to the review: /post/home-here thank you for being the cool person you are. we need to stick together. love from tris.

eye level number 58 is not a lonesome callback to gallery 58. alas, that isn’t there anymore. instead, we’re looking at the latest show at @novadogallery : one that features the work of @brookelanierfineart and @outfieldoils , aka robert glisson.

eye level number fifty-seven is, appropriately, devoted to 5.7. that’s the sculptors guild show that is happening in three locations across the downtown: mora (80 grand street), firmament at the nimbus arts center (329 warren street) and paulus hook park at the corner of washington and grand. this show was put together by one of our most inspired curators: @tinamanecaart . she’s been doing great work at mora. for copiers/pasters such as me: /post/5-7-sculptors-guild more to come: shows at casa colombo, novado gallery, and deep space special projects. always lots to write about! rock, tris

we’re now up to fifty-six eye level posts. that’s one shy of dimaggio. this week, we’re looking at “scars on the body of freedom,” a harrowing but timely show at @smushgallery (340 summit ave.) art by @aleceblack and @alex_garikovich . direct link below for those who defy instagram and copy and paste. you are my kind of people. /post/garikovich-black-scars-on-the-body-of-freedom look for posts about shows at novado gallery, mora, and drawing rooms soon. you keep hanging them and i will keep writing. rock, tris

thank you for indulging my excursion into local politics. early this year, it was my pleasure to review “in spite of our fears,” a temblor of a show at the grover house in caldwell by @tatyana.kazakova.art . she’s back with another exhibition of her work at @imur_gallery (67 greene st.), and it’s the subject of eye level #55. /post/tatyana-kazakova-afterland

the painting is by matt gabel. the opinions are by me. i tell you what i think of the candidates for jersey city mayor, one by one. /post/tris-mccall-election-special by the end of the night tonight, we’ll know who made the runoff. but the sun hasn’t set yet. maybe you’re looking for a personal election overview before you step into the booth. or maybe you just like pieces like this. i did my best, which is no better than what you could do. i’d love to know what you think, and how you’re leaning. you know how to get at me: [email protected], forever and always.
