Today is Sunday Funday! Come out to my Artist Talk for “Playing Favorites”, curated by @andreamckenna19 at @ahpgallery - 2-4 PM. Learn about my process, the show, how this show came to be and MORE! I’m feeling chatty. 😆 #AlcoholInk #ContemporaryArt #BlackArt
There will be LOTS to do this weekend in Jersey City! If you can, drop by on Sunday from 2-4PM for my Artist Talk for “Playing Favorites” at @ahpgallery #alcoholink #playtimeisover #contemporaryart
On this episode of SCDSART, Bryant Small plays at anything but small. His attention to color, culture, energy and his use of mathematical shapes in this exhibition make his works free flowing yet structured and aesthetically compelling. Well done on a beautifully curated solo exhibition.
It was also opening of @bfly777 ’s “Playing Favorites” solo exhibition of his alcohol ink paintings at @ahpgallery yesterday. I have loved Bryant’s work ever since I saw it in a group show almost 10 years ago. So to see what he and curator @andreamckenna19 consider their favs “… offers a rare glimpse into the personal logic and emotional resonance that shape Small’s evolving practice.”
The show is up through May, gallery hours weekends 1-4 or by appointment.

Playing Favorites is an intimate and revelatory solo exhibition by Bryant Small. Bringing together a selection of the artist’s most cherished works—many of which have never been exhibited publicly—this presentation offers a rare glimpse into the personal logic and emotional resonance that shape Small’s evolving practice.
Rather than a retrospective, Playing Favorites unfolds as a deliberate act of selection guided by instinct, memory, and material connection. Small highlights works that have remained close—pieces that mark turning points, unresolved questions, or quiet triumphs within his studio process. The exhibition invites viewers to consider what it means for an artist to choose favorites: not as definitive statements of value, but as reflections of intimacy, risk, and attachment. In revealing these works, Small opens a space between the private and the public, where the act of making becomes inseparable from the act of keeping.

I’ve got work from my series Grey Pride and my 2022 book project Everything Comes to Bilal on the walls, and it’s been rewarding seeing them live in this space alongside pieces from other amazing artists.
