Salvadori's film captures both the performance and preparations, showing glimpses into the creative process, Lee's distinctive compositional and performance practice and personality, and the musicianship of each Explore Ensemble member. Signals was originally commissioned by Explore Ensemble, and co-commissioned by Transit Festival, @hcmfuk , and Rainy Days / @philharmonie_lux . Flung is proud to present its fifth release and first vinyl LP: Okkyung Lee’s Signals, featuring Explore Ensemble, out on 6 March. Read more below and listen to the preview available on Bandcamp (link in bio) A major new work by cellist and composer Okkyung Lee with London’s Explore Ensemble, Signals dissolves boundaries between live performance, studio construction, and electroacoustic illusion. Originally premiered by Lee and Explore Ensemble in 2024, Lee creates a hybrid live/studio record by taking recordings from performances in Leuven, Huddersfield, and Luxembourg, and restructuring them with additional layers created and edited in the studio. Lee’s hybrid construction blurs the line between real and imagined acoustics, where the listener’s sense of small and huge, near and far, dark and bright, all combine in seemingly impossible ways, restlessly morphing between materialisation and dissolution. The album unfolds in seven sections that flow continuously; one for each member of the ensemble where they take on a solo role, plus Lee’s own section. Every section creates a distinct environment that tests the boundaries between instrument and performer. A release that feels both self-interrogating and outward-looking, Signals folds Lee’s personal language together with collective form. This week: a very rare chance to hear Clarence Barlow's "Im Januar am Nil", conducted by Jack Sheen at Wigmore Hall as part of LCMF's 2025 special night "The Artist is Not Present". This video shows Jack Ox's colour organ depicting the algorithmic spiral behind Barlow's ensemble piece. The synths play a spectral transcription of the phonemes of Barlow voice, signing nonsense phrases (in German) that avoid consonants, hence the title. Join us on Thu 20 Nov for this retro-computer music treat, realised by acoustic ensemble. Tickets via link in bio! #clarencebarlow #computermusic #retrocomputer #computerart #spectral #ensemble #london

New-In: Gotta give it to Finland’s Frozen Reeds imprint. Though at times we’ve paused, noting how they tend to order the top shelf wine almost exclusively, selecting the most singular avant musicians in the vineyard, each of their limited releases (just eight or so stretched over thirteen years) has become a real event: Thomas Brinkman. Derek Bailey & Paul Motian. Julius Eastman. And that’s just the start of the alphabet. They have a Morton Feldman release too. And now from Feldman to … Mark Fell _Psychic Resynthesis_ 2Lp, an instrumental work performed by Explore Ensemble. And unlike some of the American tabletop, electronic and noise folks who use a few pieces of gear or a theme or two to make an entire sandwich, Fell’s methods and forms are truly transdisciplinary, in almost all senses. As the one-sheet suggests, Fell’s rigor and “conceptual approach to electronic music and sound art […] explores the limits of structure, rhythm, and perception through a blend of computational systems, philosophical inquiry, and cultural critique.” Most artists barely approach one of these projects/lines of inquiry, while Fell appears to always be in motion, always at work and always developing. Again the one-sheet: “Having been a notable critic of classical music’s slavish adherence to traditional musical notation, ‘the score,’ and its associated issues of control and hierarchy, one might expect a provocative or abrasive approach. Instead, a work of deep, tonal introspection unfolds — an elegant structure navigating the artist’s trepidatious relationship with linear or timeline-based musical approaches […] Mathematical determination and sonic fixation vie for dominance.” This record takes time to unpack, though for now we are at work on some bootleg Mark Fell t-shirts. Front will consist of the album cover art. Back will be a NYHC design and font with “Vie for Dominance” square in the center. Cc: @explore_ensemble @corruptionlunch
