Read below... especially that last part 👀
You'll never be ready because that's not how ready works.
A lot of beginner dancers don't want to enter prelims until they 'feel ready'.
But the secret is... you only feel ready BY entering prelims.
No matter how good you are skill-wise, nothing makes up for experience.
You can train to a super high level theoretically, but your first prelim will always be shaky & scary.
Because what you haven't practiced is executing under pressure, performing to a crowd, managing distractions, and a million other variables that come with a live improvised performance artform.
You can't practice these things theoretically.
So here is my advice if you're new to this thing:
Start entering prelims as soon as possible. You can start with smaller community battles (maybe don't enter Summer Dance Forever just yet) and work your way up.
Write off your first 20 prelims. Forget 'em.
Don't worry about how well you danced or whether you get through. Just do them & get some experience under your belt.
Through this process, you will start to feel comfortable and able to execute. This is what being 'ready' is.
And in reality... a lot of times 'not feeling ready' is just an excuse because you're scared.
