This week we are saying a fond farewell to our colleague, Dave Adcock, after more than 26 years working with Exeter City Council.
Dave has always thrown himself into life at the Custom House, often "balancing" multiple roles and responsibilities. Who could forget his cameo in the Onedin Line redux film, trying out circus skills on the Piazza (pictured), or delivering the shipping forecast on River Radio? Never afraid to don a costume, Dave has given us plenty of memorable moments and some fantastic photos and footage that we promise not to share… for now!
Dave has always gone above and beyond to make sure things happen and succeed, from early mornings and late nights to everything in between. He’s become a familiar and much-loved face among the quayside businesses, and there are certainly a few places, including Puerto Lounge, that are going to notice his absence - and the impact on their takings.
From all of us at the Exteter Canal and Quay Trust, thank you, Dave. You will be sorely missed. We wish you all the very best with your travels and plans over the coming months. You will be greatly missed.
Oh, and sorry for the slightly "doctored" photo...
Just don’t forget to come back and help out at the Shanty Festival - we still need the return of “Dave’s Bar” and ensuring it is running at full capacity!

Join us for a special evening of inspiring and thought-provoking films and themed canapés as part of the Sustainable Seas Festival.
Feature Film: Jo in the Water
🎬 Sea swimming is Jo Bateman’s sanctuary, until sewage spills begin to threaten the waters she loves. What follows is a powerful David-and-Goliath story, as Jo transforms from passionate swimmer into determined activist, taking on one of the UK’s largest water companies.
🎤 The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers, plus a live performance of “Earth’s Child”, as featured in the film.
Also showing:
🎬 Salmon Run – a short film directed by Pip Piper, exploring an annual community ultra-marathon along the River Exe. The project highlights the plight of endangered Atlantic salmon and encourages empathy with their remarkable journey upstream, supporting awareness and river restoration.
🎬 Tappermade – a short documentary on Sophia Tapper – chemist, mother, and founder of local ocean-derived skincare and healthcare brand Tappermade.
All filmmakers will be present for this unique evening, introduced and hosted by Tess Read.
Chef Gideon Hitchin, who recently hosted a sold out pop-up restaurant at The Custom House, will be providing fishy canapés during the interval, to compliment the experience.
It promises to be a very special evening, so do join us if you can. Tickets via the link in our bio.
