Aronimink, Merion, the Philadelphia Cricket Club. These are just some of the golf courses in the Philadelphia region recognized as legends of the sport. This week, as the eyes of the golf world turn toward Philadelphia, Cobbs Creek makes its steady return to that list of local greats. Cobbs Creek Golf Course has long held a unique place in the City of Brotherly Love’s history. Its legacy is shaped by decades of community connection and a history rooted in accessibility and inclusion in American golf. Today, that legacy is helping inform a new vision for what a golf destination can be. At the Lincoln Financial Center at Cobbs Creek, EwingCole, along with our design partners at @blackneyhayes , approached the center as more than a traditional clubhouse design. The result is a social, welcoming environment that brings together golf, dining, learning, and community gathering under one roof. Visual connectivity, flexible programming, and vibrant public spaces create an experience designed for golfers and non-golfers alike. As golf continues to evolve, Cobbs Creek offers a model that looks firmly toward the future of the sport. It has been an absolute pleasure to be part of this project and this incredible team: @cobbs.creek.foundation @cobbscreekcampus @littlehorsetavern @lfdriscoll @beckerfrondorf @exploreexit @beam_ltd #cobbscreek #interiordesign #golfdesign #drivingrange

We bet you haven’t seen a hospital like this one before. Located above the western shore of Lake Superior, Essentia Health’s new flagship hospital – St. Mary’s Medical Center - streamlines medical services, invigorates patients and families with engaging amenities and redefines the continuum of care for patients throughout the region. The new lake-side hospital challenges contemporary healthcare design strategies with bold and innovative solutions. Essentia Health’s goal was to update the healthcare campus and modernize its facilities to support its patient-centric care delivery model more effectively. Aesthetically, its exterior recalls the undulating surface of the mighty Lake Superior, while its interior design pays homage to the region’s natural environment, people, and history. Functionally, St. Mary’s consolidates both inpatient and outpatient services under one roof, such as inpatient and outpatient surgical services, cardiology, a pediatrics hospital, and much more.

The Richard A. Balderston OPC ’69 Lower School at @penncharter creates a vibrant home for early learners, shaped by daylight, outdoor access, and flexible spaces that support learning throughout the day. Inspired by nature, the building’s playful, modern design connects classrooms directly to outdoor terraces and play areas, blending indoor and outdoor environments. Its meandering form reflects Philadelphia’s Wissahickon Valley Park, echoed in layered materials, offset corridors, and biophilic details like living trees, tree-trunk columns, leaf-patterned ceilings, and warm wood finishes. This integrated approach creates a welcoming learning environment that promotes environmental responsibility, encourages creativity, and helps children understand their relationship to the world around them. What does it mean to design a high-performance civic building within a coastal ecosystem? In this conceptual case study, EwingCole’s Sports & Entertainment team explores how architecture can work with the landscape rather than reshape it, balancing net-zero energy goals, ecological restoration, and community identity within the tidal marshes of South Carolina’s Lowcountry. From passive design strategies and photovoltaic integration to habitat restoration and public waterfront access, the project demonstrates how cultural facilities can reduce environmental impact while strengthening the ecological systems around them. Each May, Preservation Month offers an opportunity to look closely at the buildings that shape our communities and how we choose to carry them forward. Historic preservation and adaptive reuse are not separate strategies, but complementary approaches that extend the life of existing structures while maintaining the character and stories embedded within them. From healthcare facilities to research environments to cultural landmarks, thoughtful intervention can unlock new performance while reinforcing a sense of place. Our Director of Sustainable Design, Maria Papiez, M.S., AIA, LEED AP BDC, NCARB, highlights several projects that demonstrate how existing buildings can be refined rather than replaced, supporting sustainability, operational goals, and long-term community impact. Cobbs Creek has always stood for access. Now, it’s setting a new standard for what a public golf destination can be. With the grand opening of the Lincoln Financial Center, the course enters its next chapter—one shaped by hospitality, community, and a more inclusive approach to the game. EwingCole partnered with the @cobbs.creek.foundation and @blackneyhayes to design a clubhouse experience that welcomes everyone, from avid golfers to first-time visitors. Inside, spaces like @littlehorsetavern , flexible event areas, and a reimagined pro shop create new opportunities to gather, connect, and engage with the course. The design draws from the landscape and the site’s history, reinforcing Cobbs Creek’s legacy while expanding its role as both a neighborhood anchor and a regional destination. Ah, springtime. Time to shake off the frost and get outside. Providing ample access to the outdoors is integral to our education studio’s designs. It improves cognitive performance, reduces stress, supports physical well-being, and leads to better overall academic outcomes overall. As the capstone project of a multi-phase campus transformation, The Richard A. Balderston OPC ’69 Lower School at @penncharter completes the vision of an academic village by integrating Pre-K through Grade 5 within a shared home that embodies the school’s values of community, stewardship, equality, and simplicity. The design concept creates a protected enclave for the school’s youngest learners, inspired by nature and employing contextual yet playful, modern architecture and interior design. The landscape and play areas are conceived as a place of exploration, intended to mature into a “learning forest” in the years to come. Inside and out, the design strengthens a continuous connection to nature: 🟢 Expansive glazing that brings daylight deep into learning environments and maintains constant visual access to the outdoors 🟢 Direct connections from classrooms to outdoor learning terraces and play spaces 🟢 A central courtyard that anchors the building and creates a shared outdoor heart for gathering and exploration 🟢 Natural materials and textures that reflect the surrounding landscape and reinforce a sense of warmth and calm 🟢 Interior biophilic elements—organic forms, earthy tones, and visual connections to greenery—that support focus and well-being 🟢 Outdoor spaces designed as extensions of the classroom, encouraging hands-on, nature-based learning By blurring the boundary between indoors and outdoors, the Lower School creates an environment where curiosity grows alongside the landscape itself. Healthcare design is evolving, and so are the expectations placed on it. At @geisingerhealth Medical Center, the South Tower expansion rethinks how patients, families, and care teams experience the hospital environment. From a hospitality-informed arrival sequence to all-private patient rooms, every design decision supports dignity, clarity, and comfort at every touchpoint. The vertically integrated care model brings ICU, OR, and med/surg units into closer alignment, improving efficiency while strengthening connections across the care journey. Behind the scenes, staff-focused planning, from off-stage circulation to bedside charting, helps reduce burnout and streamline daily routines. As healthcare systems continue to adapt, projects like this demonstrate how thoughtful design can elevate both patient outcomes and caregiver experience—today and into the future. Acoustics to engage Successful Learning. The School District of Philadelphia (SDP) is dedicated to delivering equitable, high-quality education in modern, supportive learning environments. Serving over 200,000 students citywide, the district continues to upgrade its facilities to meet the evolving needs of students, teachers, and families; recognizing that effective learning depends not only on technology and design, but also on well-managed acoustics. The original Lewis C. Cassidy Elementary School, a century-old structure in West Philadelphia’s Overbrook neighborhood, presented significant challenges. Outdated classrooms, limited technological infrastructure, and inadequate building systems hindered the school’s ability to provide a next-generation learning experience. To better serve the community, SDP set out to replace the aging building with a forward-thinking facility designed for academic excellence, sustainability, and neighborhood engagement. Partnering with SDP, @ewingcole designed the new Lewis C. Cassidy Academic Plus School, an 83,000-square-foot K–8 facility serving 570 students. Central to its success is the integration of acoustic performance. Through acoustic textured wall panels and acoustic ceiling baffle systems, the school effectively controls sound to enhance speech clarity, focus, and comfort. The result is a fully realized environment where both the design and the educational experience are complete. Project: Lewis C.
