As we approach the UNESCO International Day of Light on May 16, it’s another reminder that light should be designed thoughtfully — for people, communities, and the natural environment. The day celebrates the role of light in science, culture, education, and sustainable development.
At BEAM ltd., we approach every project with responsibility and purpose, integrating sustainable design technologies and strategies that support both human experience and environmental stewardship. Our experience with LEED and WELL projects, along with ASHRAE and energy code requirements, is critical to meeting the demands of today’s built environment.

Lighting has a way of changing how a space feels — not just how it looks. Many spaces today are overlit, which removes focus and flattens the experience. But lighting that’s intentional and well-designed can create a sense of calm, a jolt of energy or even mimic the natural rhythms of daylight.
Our partners at @beam_ltd approach lighting as a partner to our design rather than a competing voice. Their ability to listen closely, respect the vision, and enhance what’s already there results in an environment where lighting supports function while creating depth, movement, and even a bit of drama.
Thoughtfully placed lighting that is layered to balance ambient and functional needs, combined with our design, transformed this hallway from flat and average to intentional and alive.
When lighting is done right, even the most ordinary space can feel first class.

Inspired by the latest spring edition of Preservation Alliance of Philadelphia’s Extant Magazine and its look into Philadelphia’s historic private clubs, it’s exciting to reflect on how these institutions continue to preserve the city’s architectural and cultural legacy.
At BEAM ltd., we’ve had the opportunity to contribute to several of these remarkable environments through lighting design, including The Cosmopolitan Club of Philadelphia and The Philadelphia Club. Thoughtful lighting plays a key role in revealing historic character — highlighting craftsmanship, creating atmosphere, and helping these spaces continue to feel timeless for future generations.

Saint Mark’s Church, a Gothic Revival landmark dating to 1849, had long been struggled with uneven lighting that diminished its stonework, wood detailing, and artwork. Our designers Christina Spangler and Jason Bradshaw were engaged to develop a solution that would improve visibility and reinforce a sense of reverence, while carefully preserving the building’s architectural integrity.
“While the lighting transformed the space, it plays a minor role. The luminaires are not meant to be seen, but utilized to illuminate the architecture, sacred objects, and people. In this design, we used lighting to reveal the space.” - Christina Spangler, LC, Lighting Director at BEAM.
BEAM had a great time at @leducationnyc —exploring new luminaires, attending insightful lectures, and connecting with so many inspiring people from the industry. We also enjoyed being part of dinner hosted by @sistemalux and @iguzzini — such a great way to continue the night!
We were thrilled to host the first WILD Philadelphia Speed Mentoring event—an inspiring evening connecting emerging professionals with experienced voices in lighting and design through meaningful conversations. A huge thank you to all of our incredible mentors for sharing your time and knowledge, and to our sponsor @vodelight for supporting this impactful event!
Behind every finished space is a process. We begin with sketches, translate ideas into floor plans and construction documents, and carry them through to a built environment.
Images can spark inspiration, but the technical plans are what make a project real. They’re the language that turns intention into something a contractor can actually build.
As new tools and technologies reshape the field, the fundamentals still matter. The discipline of design — knowing how to move from concept to construction — is what carries the work from idea to reality.
These images of the main corridor from our ongoing multifamily residential project at the historic Drake building are a look behind the scenes at how the work comes together. They show the progression from the planning and rendering stages of the work to a fully realized space.

BEAM is hosting this upcoming event! If you are a lighting design student, an architect or an interior designer that is interested in learning more about lighting design or an emerging professional in our field, please join us April 7th! Good food + conversation makes for an enlightening evening!
Our senior lighting designer Christina Spangler traveled to Calgary to visit Luminii’s showroom and factory, sharing feedback on upcoming products and seeing their work in action at the BMO Centre. The trip also included a visit to Banff, complete with a scenic bus ride and an unforgettable dog sledding adventure. Great food, cozy campfire nights with hot chocolate and s’mores, it was the perfect blend of inspiration and experience. Thank you Griffin and @div_grp !
One of our lighting designers, Jason Bradshaw, visited Alphabet’s factory in Irvine, CA. The trip was filled with learning about their manufacturing process, exploring new lighting solutions, and connecting with the team behind the products. Thank you Griffin and @div_grp !
We loved seeing the custom lighting from ASCENTI Lighting come to life at SORA West! The suspended circular luminaires create a warm halo effect that brings character and ambience to the courtyard and pedestrian space. A great collaboration and a beautiful result.
