Six months ago, I made a quick clay sketch of a new small sculpture. I immediately knew it would be my new favorite sculpture, one that demanded full attention and a larger scale. Now, after so many hours of work, I’m honored to present “Vigilance”.

I’m so excited to announce my upcoming solo show at @jrinehartgallery ! “Herd” will open April 2nd. Come join us for an opening reception and celebration. This sculpture, “Squish”, was the first sculpt I did in 2026. I knew from the first sketch I was going to love it. However, it wasn’t until unloading the wood kiln months later did I get to see that the flames and ash loved it as well.

You keep doing any given thing for long enough, and you’ll experience all sorts of wild edge cases. Yesterday was one of those days. At about 600f yesterday, a large refired pot violently exploded in the wood kiln. Shockingly, almost every other thing in the kiln is fine, but there are shards *everywhere*. After a lot of debating and peering into the dark, we cooled the kiln, opened it, and are carefully cleaning each piece and reloading it. A single shard fused into a bowl will ruin it. Better to redo a day and a half of work than loose 1/3 of the kiln. I’ve been photographing beasts for Thursday’s shop launch! I should have about 7 smaller beasts, from October and November’s firings - the few proud survivors. I’m amazed with all of the surfaces on these beasts. I feel like we’re really starting to dial in the cloud kiln.
