How?! HOW?! Since Long Covid, my dexterity is poor. Gone are the days of easily getting in a cannula into a 25 week premie and instead I struggle with a wing eyeliner and writing an email. The older I get, the less interested I am in making myself smaller to fit somebody else’s comfort zone. Apparently there’s an expiry date on certain clothes once you hit a certain age. Too old for the dress. Too old for the makeup. Too old to show confidence. Too old to take up space without apologising for it. Funny really, because I feel far more comfortable in my body now at almost 40 than I ever did at 20. And at 20, I was a super teeny weenie size 4 to 6, much more aligned to the toxic fashion standards. Ageing has given me perspective. It’s taught me that confidence is far more attractive than obedience. I’ve worked hard for this body, this mindset, this freedom and I’m not about to start dressing for people who think women should disappear quietly after a certain age. Danessa, Danessa, Danessa… Where do I start?? I love a good setting spray and @charlottetilbury has been my go-to for years. YEARS. I’m not giving it up any time soon, but I am making room for @danessamyricks_europe in my makeup routine. You know me. If I’m going to review a product, it’s definitely getting fully road tested first. Especially when it comes to midlife makeup, textured skin, fine lines and brown skin undertones. Mist/powder hybrids can go very wrong very quickly if they leave a white cast or turn ashy. I’ve been testing this for months and keep coming back to the same conclusion. I fear I may have accidentally become someone who needs practice whipping egg whites. It’s been a few weeks since a highlights post and apparently I’ve spent that time bouncing between beauty launches, collagen conversations and terrarium making. Went to the @primark.beauty Pro masterclass thanks to @seen_group …am I the last person to know Primark did makeup that is actually… really good? Finally got introduced to @drhauschka.gb with @littlelightpr properly after hearing about the brand for years. Very spa energy. Fell in love with @viviennewestwood frames @mondotticagroup press day with @fabricpr . @dermalogicauk celebrated 40 years of Daily Microfoliant with @thefullmontyldn and I learnt I’ve been using it wrong this entire time. You’re supposed to whip it into a cloud apparently, not aggressively apply damp powder. Also saw actual real life @officialmelb and @samanthafaiers with at the @revivecollagen event which felt surreal for anyone raised on Spice World, and DMCs with @huda.makeup.london Built terrariums with @biossance and was probably too happy I matched my outfit to the brand. @ldncommunications hosted a gorgeous client showcase with @monsoon @peacocks_fashion and @bonmarche and I left manifesting several outfits in my wardrobe for summer! Also caught up with the beautiful @reigatecreative ladies and @taniahergenhahn which is always a pleasure! First @cultskin EMSCULPT NEO treatment for the old mum tum. 20000 ab crunches in 30 mins. Where is my award? @susannekaufmann_ is a brand I have been curious about for years so excited to have Nutrient Serum and Advanced Anti-Ageing Cream. @gatineau_skincare is @qvcbeauty May pick of the month and the Night Recovery Essence looks 👌🏽 Bumper box from @alphahskincare and the peptide body oil is 10/10. Having never tried @erborian_uk , the Centella cleansers have been high on the list to try and I feel pairing with this incredibly gentle exfoliant from @paiskincare will be perfect! POV: you finally found a dress that can do day to night AND it’s on sale. I think one of the best style lessons I’ve learnt in my late 30s is that the right dress can save you an entire day of logistics. This one started at the @primark.beauty PRO masterclass with trainers and an oversized denim shirt, came with me to a @dermalogicauk event, then made it all the way to the @revivecollagen event (with the actual real life Mel B) after a very quick change into platforms and a leather jacket. No emergency outfit change. No agonising over my wardrobe wondering how I was going to figure out a full fit change. No hauling a second look round London in a bindle like Dick Whittington. I also love that it actually works on a petite frame without drowning me in fabric or ending an inch from where Freya came out of. This is the kind of midlife style I want now. Easy, comfortable, flattering and adaptable enough for anything I have in the diary. Am I now a plant person? Had the loveliest afternoon with @biossance building terrariums at @botanicalboys and learning more about the science and sustainability behind the brand. I already knew Biossance were big on vegan squalane, but I didn’t realise quite how much thought goes into the process. Their sugar cane derived squalane takes almost a year to ferment, the leftover sugar cane is then reused for packaging, the ink is more ocean-friendly soy-based, and they’ve donated more than £850k to the charity @oceana_uk . It’s one of those brands where the sustainability side actually feels embedded into the business rather than added on afterwards for marketing. I also learned that squalane can help improve the delivery of other skincare ingredients, which explains why my skin always seems to drink up their products. Personal favourites are the Growth Factor Cream, which I see most glorious texture always leaves my skin looking and feeling incredible, and the 100% Squalane Oil which is brilliant on dry patches, cuticles and the ends of my hair. Also have not been able to stop thinking about the fact terrariums were invented, completely by accident, by a doctor trying to experiment with moths. A terrible day for the moths. A great day for plants. I cannot recommend this activity enough! Well that was a surprise! First impressions of the @yepoda Dewy Day Cushion Foundation and I’m so impressed with how this wore throughout the day. My experience of K beauty cushion foundations has been great on finish, they always seem to hit the right side of dewy, so I wasn’t surprised that this was a smash on the finish front. However, the coverage and wear were a total pleasant surprise. No additional concealer needed, proper full coverage without feeling heavy and claustrophobic. I definitely picked a shade that’s a touch too fair and slightly too neutral for me, but the finish itself? Really lovely. Glowy without crossing over into greasy, lightweight on the skin and it sat far better over texture than I expected. K-beauty cushion foundations really do hit differently for midlife skin. I set my make up with just a light layer of @danessamyricks_europe setting spray and a tiny bit of @yslbeauty powder through my T-zone. I’ve always had a soft spot for cushion foundations anyway. I know I used a brush here because my skin has been extra reactive recently, so I wanted everything freshly cleaned and as hygienic as possible, but normally I do prefer applying cushion foundation with the puff itself. You get that smoother, more even airbrushed finish without little pockets of product sitting on the skin. Very curious to keep testing this one because the formula feels promising for dry, dehydrated or midlife skin that still wants glow without heaviness. Finishing products when you get sent a lot of PR is hard to do and probably says quite a lot… As always, these are honest thoughts whether I’m talking about products I’ve purchased or products I’ve been sent in PR; either way they had to compete with a constant stream of newness…and still made it to empty so my thoughts are based on a lot of data There’s a mix here. I’m still riding this high! Shooting my petite edit with @aspigalondon and @roden in Belgravia felt a bit surreal. Not just because the weather was hopping between gorgeous and potential sabotage (many a Marilyn moment was had, sorry for the flashing London) , but because I got to actually see what goes into a fashion shoot behind the scenes. The unglamorous outfit changes, the pacing, the problem solving when your “dressing room” threatens to take flight, the ‘is this too booby or just booby enough conversations and of course the ‘is it time for a cup of tea yet?’. There’s also something I don’t take lightly about being in front of the camera for something like this. Petite. Midlife. Brown skin. Not exactly the default setting in fashion, so being in this position is serious business. It was a long, busy day, lots of walking, lots of filming, and those in-between moments that end up being the best content anyway. Coffee stops, street crossings, and yes, a glass of rosé to finish.
