✨ESTYN HULBERT - 1st yr MFA candidate✨
We are featuring each of our students who participated in the epic 1st Summit of Jewelry Classes @pinakothekdermoderne during @schmuckmuenchen . Grateful for the experience, and sharing the room with brilliant classes and educators from all around the world.

In my random and rare posts here I don’t think I’ve explained that I’m in graduate school! I’m an MFA candidate in Metal at SUNY New Paltz. @newpaltzmetal
The program is excellent. I’m learning skills and techniques, studying art history and the contemporary art world, engaging in personal research and self-directed making, and connecting with my colleagues and the wider metalsmithing community. It’s intense and challenging and I absolutely love it.
After 20+ years of making my living as a jeweler, I’m taking as much advantage as I can of this opportunity to explore new ideas and ways of working without worrying about successful outcomes. I’m making both jewelry and sculptural objects, some of them pretty strange! 😜
I don’t know what I’ll be making when I come out the other side, but I’m hopeful that it’ll be different and exciting. For now I thought I’d share a few snapshots from life in the studio over the last year.
Local friends, come see what my talented classmates @newpaltzmetal and I have been making this semester!
ACQUIRED TASTES is a sustainability project, an exhibition and fundraiser for student scholarships and Radical Jewelry Makeover, an international community jewelry mining and recycling project focused on education and collaboration. This Fall, SUNY New Paltz Metal engaged the project! We received over 250 lbs of donated jewelry, which we photographed, examined, and sorted into categories based upon its material composition with the leadership of Radical Jewelry Makeover directors @susieganch and @kdangerk .
Students, local alumni, and faculty have been working away on designing a range of works that respond to these materials and some of your stories. Students are recycling and melting down silver into ingots to process new material and are deconstructing and remaking components with fresh perspective, while learning about all the materials and techniques used in the jewelry industry. Please view the exhibition, purchase some unique takes created from these donations, support students, and follow along: on instagram @newpaltzmetal , and newpaltzmetal.com/rjm
Just a glimpse of the work involved in reclaiming a filthy tangled mess of old dead stock chain donated for @radicaljewelrymakeover (part of my MFA studies @newpaltzmetal .) 🤪 Now to make something beautiful out of it…
There are some beautiful, major pieces by my aunt Jessica Rose in the auction of the Pilloff Collection, which ends on Thursday Jan. 16th. -- link in profile
The auction house website has a video of Francine Pilloff talking about the collection where she describes meeting Jess for the first time (and she's wearing a bullet cuff as she tells the story!).
Third week taking classes @newpaltzmetal . The simplest seeming project is challenging the hell out of me and I’m loving it. Never too late for school 😀
Big changes are happening in my life and in my jewelry business. To prepare, I’m about to have a 50% off sale on all my studio inventory. Most of these pieces are the last of their kind, so if you’re at all interested, sign up for my email list to get first dibs. I’ll be sending out an email the minute the sale goes live. Sign up link is in my profile 👆🏻
