Within minutes of setting-up for this @ester_chicago shoot, songwriter Anna Holmquist had dialed-in a glassy, almost hollow Stratocaster sound that so perfectly captured the space of the @oldtownschoolmusicstore , we had to check to be sure it hadn’t been balanced during editing.
This practiced, seamless blending of electric guitar and cello lets the imagery of Holmquist’s lyrics ride the swells between the two instruments, blurring lines between verse and chorus, major and minor—and really riveting our shop crew with one of the most dynamic takes we’ve seen yet.
What can we say? Ester just entrances us. Cello counterpoint climbs through a shimmering clean Burgundy Mist Stratocaster, a fragile folk melody descends to meet it in a passing chord, careful but confident.
Chicago-based songwriter Anna Holmquist draws easy comparisons to the English folk-inflected tunes of Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Joanna Newsom, or even the poignant vocal work of Kate Bush, but brings an urgent intimacy to their lyrics that weaves a whole little world into three minutes and forty-three seconds.
