What a super-size milestone for @peytie_slater ! Thank you to @lcflondon_ for giving her the magic feather and helping her believe she can fly. We have lift-off! ps: her younger sister @zoeeslater wants to remind everyone that she graduated first.

“During Larry ‘Flame’ Moore’s tenure at Surfing magazine from the mid-’70s to his untimely passing in 2005,” writes Evan Slater (@eslate ) in our current issue, “one could make that case that no individual wielded more influence, broke more ground, created more stars (both in front of and behind the lens), and fueled surfing’s forward trajectory more than Moore. Why? Because Moore was more. More intense. More competitive. More driven. More relentless. More insatiable. And more passionate than anyone around him. That passion was contagious. Those in his orbit couldn’t help but rise to meet his sky-high expectations and, ultimately, his approval.” Pick up a copy of TSJ 33.3 to check out “The Red Right Hand: The life and work of photographer Larry ‘Flame’ Moore” in full. 1. So proud of my Big lil’ Bro @dylanslater on his new role at @outerknown @firewiresurfboards and @slaterdesigns . Along with our “distant” cousin @kellyslater and the rest of these talented teams, there’s no limit to what they can do for surfing. Excited to watch it grow!

👨‍🎓🏄‍♂️🌟 EVAN SLATER HOMETOWN: Ventura, CA COLLEGE: University of California, San Diego YEAR OF GRADUATION: 1994 MAJOR: Sociology MINOR: Creative Writing PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT: Sun Bum JOB TITLE: Chief Marketing Officer WHAT YEAR DID YOU START AT SUN BUM? 2023   DESCRIBE YOUR JOB AND RESPONSIBILITIES: I work with a talented team on bringing the Sun Bum brand to life in the marketplace. This includes all retail, digital media and events. Sun Bum started as a small group of friends making sun care products for their friends and it’s our job to continue that mission to move the needle on skin cancer.   WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING IN THIS POSITION? Our mission is serious but we still have a lot of fun in everything we do.   WHAT JOBS DID YOU HOLD PREVIOUSLY? VP Global Marketing at Billabong (5 years), VP Marketing at Hurley (10 years), Editor Surfing Magazine (8 years)   AS A DEDICATED NSSA COMPETITOR IN YOUR YOUTH DAYS, WHAT MADE YOU TRANSITION TO BIG WAVE RIDING? It became clear to me by my senior year in high school that I wasn’t going to be able to keep up with my friends like @taylor_knox , @patchy_o and @rob_machado on tour, so I committed to getting an education while still pursuing my goals of improving as a surfer. I took my first trip to Todos Santos during my freshman year in college and fell in love with the challenge of riding big waves.   WHY DID YOU CHOOSE UCSD? San Diego was far enough from Ventura to make me feel like I was “on my own”. Plus, Blacks.   WHAT DID YOU ENJOY THE MOST ABOUT ATTENDING UCSD? My best memories are from the Surf Team events like the “Winter Formal” and the “Beer Open.” Just going all-in with a great group of friends at a time in life when the future had endless possibilities.   WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE TIME ON THE COLLEGE SURF TEAM? Getting revenge on Point Loma and @rictator in 1991.   WHAT EXPERIENCES AS A COLLEGE STUDENT DID YOU FIND MOST VALUABLE? Discipline, Deadlines, Endless hours of preparation for a single test and above all else, a passion for constant learning and growing which continues to this day. AS A COLLEGE GRADUATE, WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG SURFERS? Wax on, wax off. Repeat. You will be rewarded.

Mission accomplished! A five-day Ecuador surf trip/Uber service from the coast to @merazonia_refuge . @peytie_slater will be volunteering there in August so we decided to ride a few waves before she’s Rain-Forest-locked for a full month. It was our first time there and we were blown away by the beauty of the country and the people. Thank you Ecuador and especially @josesalvadorm and @rickyechanique for all the guidance! (Way better than Google Maps). Can’t wait to return!

A sampling of some of my favorite albums painted by @zoeeslater for Father’s Day. It’s really fun being a dad through all the age cycles…sometimes even more fun than surfing.

Thirty years ago today, I drove down the hill to 6655 La Jolla Blvd for my very first date with @jslater123 For no reason other than I was 21 years old, I was 45 minutes late but holding a Vons-bought bouquet of orange gerbera daisies because her friend Chrissy told me she liked them (she actually didn’t). When I knocked on the door, Jen told her roommate not to answer. A couple moments passed and, just as I started to wonder what I might do with a $9.99 rejected floral arrangement, the door opened. It hasn’t shut since. Thank you for changing your mind and picking me, Jennifer Sarfeh. I promise I’ll never be late again.
