a simple cylinder made interesting with faceting and sprigs! finally glazed this one from our workshop with @claremontceramics as I needed to pick a glaze that would enhance and not swallow the detail.

✨ naked raku ✨
The reveal is always the best part!
This past weekend we held another @cernamic raku club. It's always such a lovely time to hang out with other raku lovers and experiment with different techniques. We've been working on naked raku where you dip the piece in slip and a cover glaze that cracks off after being in the reduction bin (in theory!).

Sodium silicate technique. While some potters use coloured slip to highlight the texture, I prefer using a wash for a natural look that reminds me of wood.

a chonky little horse 🐎
This was a quick 5 min build as an example for a Chinese/Lunar New Year Zodiac kids class at @cernamic , but I liked it enough to keep and glaze it ☺️
I used @maycocolors black walnut for the body, birch for the mane and tail, and @amacobrent snow for that dapple effect 🫧

🫧 bubble boi! 🫧
This was a fun one to make, playing with the shape and coloured slip, which I hadn't used in forever.
The "mallard" colour is hard to photograph, but I think the natural light captures it well, along with my two biggest supporters in the background 🦇👥🦇
Bubble Boi found its home in New Jersey where I was thrilled to hand deliver it to one of my oldest friends. There's something about the people who have known you the longest 🥰🥰

celadon mugs!
If I said this was the same glaze on 2 different clay bodies fired to the same temperature, would you believe me? I'm not sure I'd believe me, but here we are.
This celadon glaze was kindly lent to me by @aliglancy , who also takes charge and loads and fires the @cernamic members gas reduction kiln for us. The community spirit of potters always gives me the warm fuzzies ☺️

faceted vase 🌀
full disclosure: this vase was thrown by @claremontceramics during his faceting workshop at @cernamic , so I feel a little cheeky sharing it, but I did facet and glaze it!
The throwing technique that he taught us was surprisingly humbling for us all, so while we worked on cylinders, he threw us each one of these bottles so we could learn to facet them. It's such an elegant shape and I've since been working on my own that haven't been glaze fired yet ☺️

Had such a lovely day this past weekend taking a nerikomi course from @zidigong_artist at @cernamic Dalston!
Nerikomi is the Japanese term for combining different colours of clay so the design is in the clay itself, not surface decoration.
Zidi taught us the entire process from colouring clay with ceramic stain to designing linear patterns and finally kaleidoscope and marbling. It was fun, challenging, and I can't wait to explore nerikomi further.
Highly recommended if you're in the London area!

Realised I never posted pictures of my second raku polar bear. I love this little buddy even more than the first as he has so much character.
Happily he (she?) promptly found a new home with @susancahillwrites and I'm so happy it's with a friend as I don't think I would have been able to part with him otherwise!
