The week in Bizen is over. I had the best time. From digging up clay and learning from master potters to making new friends with the same obsession…CLAY!🤗☺️
Day 1: Wild Clay
A wonderful beginning to a clay-focussed week exploring bizenyaki with @taiga_mori and @mkpotterystudio
After introductions and a quick peek at the studio and kiln, we set off to harvest a few kilos of clay with permission from a local land owner at the base of a mountain.
Post lunch we enjoyed a tutorial before sorting out the stones and hammering out the iron-rich earth. In the afternoon we explored working with the fresh clay body, which was surprisingly spongy and challenging to sculpt - noting that it would ideally sit for 6 months before being used - it was a great opportunity to understand the process. Looking forward to seeing how the clay matures by the end of the week.
Special thanks to Taiga’s mum who made us an incredibly delicious lunch 🙌

Thank you to everyone who came this weekend. It was lovely to see you. Thank you to Nicolette Pak Janine and especially Marcelo for making it special 😊
All set up for our Open Studio. Lots of beautiful pottery for sale. A £5 seconds box with proceeds going to The Brain Cancer charity. Drink and lots of yummy home made canapés and cakes.
Otherworldly vessels by Elizabeth Fritsch at the Hepworth, Wakefield. So wonderful to see such a large collection of her work. Interesting fact: she studied music and played the harp before becoming a ceramic artist
