5 species of whales migrate to Los Angeles: the minke, grey, blue, fin, humpback, and orcas. The diversity on the planet helps create a balance and harmony of life. I love painting whales, because they are climate change warriors, who create ecosystems around them.
Wherever whales are found, so are phytoplankton. According to the UN Environmental Program (UNEP) These tiny creatures contribute to at least 50 per cent of all the oxygen in our atmosphere. Phytoplankton capture about 37 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide or four Amazon forests' worth.
Whales also accumulate carbon in their bodies during their long lives, some of which stretch to 200 years. When they die, they sink to the bottom of the ocean, taking the carbon with them. According to the study, each great whale sequesters around 33 tonnes of carbon dioxide on average.
To preserve and protect whale populations, we must reduce the many dangers to whales in our seas.
