“The pool has been a place of escape for me — a suspended space holding memory, freedom, and emotion at once. When I was invited to propose a visual essay for Frieze Week, I returned to the swimming pool as both subject and narrative container. It carried a both romantic and cinematic qualities I associate with the Los Angeles I fell in love with, and reflects the influence of artists such as Ed Ruscha, Stephen Shore, and Larry Sultan, whose explorations of California’s surfaces have shaped my way of seeing along the way.”

Archival footage of my mother interviewing my abuelos about their escape from Cuba in 1959. My abuelo, a sergeant in Batista’s army, fled the country during the revolution to avoid imprisonment or execution under the new regime.
