From Paris to South Africa, African American culture has transcended borders. Soul music has become a foundation for not just us, but the world. Hearing it becomes evidence that the soul, and its signals, travel far ahead of us. The fragmented tiles suggest of culture that have been broken and resembled, constantly. They create structures of connection that move beyond spoken language that connects the living and the remembered.

Eric January is a multidisciplinary artist whose paintings reflect a powerful synthesis of history, faith, and community. A Summa Cum Laude graduate of Howard University, January explores the complexities of contemporary Black life—from athletes to everyday heroes—through a lens shaped by his South Side Chicago roots.
Blending raw abstract expressionism with romantic gestures, his work balances motion and stillness, often weaving biblical allegory and cultural symbols into emotionally charged color fields. His art is both reclamation and resistance—challenging misrepresentation while honoring the divinity of Black experience. In his work, everyday objects are transformed and adorned, becoming portals into spaces where Black life is celebrated in full color and infinite possibility.
With collaborations including Nike, Microsoft, and the NBA, January’s practice bridges culture and contemporary narrative, making his voice one of the most compelling among a new generation of collectors and curators.
See his work at Pigmented: The Black Fine Art Faire, October 30 – November 2 at Zhou B Art Center.

@ericjanuarystudios on why he celebrated sport in art -
“Sport is always present in my work. Even the act of making the art feels like sport to me, the endurance, the discipline, the push it takes to bring something into existence. That process is beautiful to bring to life.”
Join us August 29th, 2025 to check out the works of Eric January at the 5th annual Big Yard Studio!
Tickets available online, link in our bio.

To give love even when your legs won’t hold you. Narrative is often written out of stories, but it never disappears, it lingers, quietly present. Offering care as a kind of endurance, in spite of the rest of the world.
