Incredibly fun project doing lighting design and fabrication for the @aurelia_institute TESSERAE Space Habitat Pavilion!
The habitat is a geodesic sphere that will self-assemble in orbit, and includes internal tiles for scientific experiments, food, rest, and play.
The TESSERAE pavilion is an earth-based modular, reconfigurable way to connect with designers, researchers, and the public on the future of life in space, giving visitors an understanding of what it takes to design for microgravity.
Now open to the public at the Seattle @MuseumOfFlight “Home Beyond Earth” exhibit.

“Totems” made with found objects, 2021. Sometimes it’s fun to make something for no purpose and no brief other than creative flow. Part of a workshop with the talented @kickie.chudikova .
Working out of his Brooklyn studio, @ericformanstudio blends fine art, design, architecture, and technology to create artwork that invites playful interaction. His creations have appeared at MoMA, Times Square, and even in orbit around the Earth! We can’t wait to see how they take shape with us here in Barcelona in the coming weeks 💫
Wood/Light III - Closed Tangle (2023)
🔈sound on
38" x 36" x 32" Wood, acrylic, steel, LEDs, electronics, software
This work is the second in a series of geometric “tangled” light sculptures. It appears to be crafted from solid wood, yet unexpectedly illuminates from within. The series is part of an ongoing investigation of merging technology with natural materials, creating surprising juxtapositions of both form and behavior.
The shapes start as hand drawn sketches, then become 3D models randomized and mutated with a parametric process subject to both aesthetic and structural constraints. "Closed Tangle" takes the series even further and uses a custom algorithm to evolve a continuous shape that meets itself.
The geometry and light patterns of each sculpture in the “Tangle” series are intended to hover between organic and synthetic. The colors and shapes are derived from natural systems, manipulated with code.
The second edition, shown here, is derived from generative particle systems. The unfolding motion of an algorithmic system is abstracted into light behavior that seems ambiguously both alive and programmed.

Wood/Light - fixture series - Triangle
A new smaller iteration from the Wood/light series.
This work is part of a series of geometric light forms that float off the wall. It appears to be solid wood, yet unexpectedly illuminates from within. The series is part of an ongoing investigation of merging technology with natural materials, creating surprising juxtapositions of both form and behavior.
The geometry and light patterns hover between organic and synthetic, with its wood grain merged with LEDs. The colors and shapes are derived from natural systems, manipulated to create shifting glowing patterns living inside.
Available with different color modes including static illumination, on request.

Wood/Light II - “Tangle” (2021)
This work is the first in a series of geometric “tangled” forms that float off the wall. Each appears to be solid wood and 3D printed joints, yet unexpectedly illuminates from within. The series is part of an ongoing investigation of merging technology with natural materials, creating surprising juxtapositions of both form and behavior.
The shapes start as hand drawn sketches, then become 3D models randomized and mutated with a parametric process subject to both aesthetic and structural constraints. Those shapes are then selected and “cross-bred” while further tweaked by hand, in a back and forth between artist and software.
The geometry and light patterns of each sculpture in the “Tangle” series exist somewhere between organic and synthetic. The colors and shapes are born from natural systems, manipulated to create shifting glowing patterns within. The first edition, shown here, is derived from the ocean: fluid dynamics, coral reefs, and aquatic life. The unfolding motion of a living system is abstracted into light behavior that seems ambiguously both alive and programmed.

Here’s another old favorite of mine from 2015. “Bee, Caupolicana gaullei” is part of the “Scale/Scape” series. These works are an investigation into the thresholds of human perception, playing with the history of halftone printing techniques. In a normal halftone print, the smallest dots and tightest density is ideal, since the image maker only wants the viewer to see the image, not its constituent parts. What happens when we make an image right on the edge between recognizable and abstract, that is both about its meaning and its building blocks?
The process updates a technique devised as a workaround, highlighting the oddness and ingenuity of its mechanism. In this case by cutting holes, rather than printing dots, the image was inverted, using light to stand in for dark, and solid wood to stand in for empty paper. Strangely unlike normal vision, here when the image is more blurred - by standing far away for example - it becomes more recognizable.
In the last slide you can see video of my custom software to translates pixel luminosity into laser-cut holes of different size. Controlling the density was critical to get the right balance of recognizable/abstract at average viewing distance. This encourages the viewer to approach and retreat the piece, as well as view from different angles. (There's an interesting occlusion effect from the side due to the relation of hole size to surface thickness.)

Two years ago, just before the world shut down, I had the opportunity to exhibit “Heart Squared” in Times Square, made in collaboration with the amazing @moduarchitecture .
On this Valentine’s Day I’d like to remember the message of love and connection this sculpture gave people through the power of free, accessible public art.

Very pleased to share this little retrospective book of the past two decades of work. It’s so satisfying to hold something in print! Certain patterns in my own art only became visible when they were all together. I hope I am lucky enough to continue making and experimenting for another twenty years… 🤓
Thank you to the brilliant @cnqmdi for the foreword.
