My favorite image type has always been the dark moody product teaser. Getting to play with mostly shadow with only hints of outline highlights is always just very satisfying to me.

Everyone always assumes my work is HEAVILY photoshopped and more retouching than photography. Sometimes that is true, but more often than not 95% of it is all in camera. It can take more time on set, but you get a much better end product. Screenshot here is straight from the raw in capture one with very few adjustments — I rarely even do many adjustments in capture one other than some curves and color balance.

Yup… really enjoying being able to generate whatever ai environment I can think up to match these product shots. Something like this would be so expensive and time consuming to make practically, you’d never find a stock shot that would work this well, and doing it in 3D would take days if not weeks. There are for sure some limitations and errors like the depth of field doesn’t match perfectly on this one… but it’s still a really amazing tool. Can’t wait to have some more control to refine these and for these to get higher res though… that’s the real limiting factor for being able to use these for commercial applications. At least with them just being backgrounds the scaling artifacts aren’t too bad though. On an iPhone screen you don’t really even notice them. #ai #aiart #aiproductphotography #barrelflashlightco #edc #edclight #mandalorian

Well, I’m sold on using ai for mood boards and background/environment generation. It’s still laughably bad at generating anything even close to a specific product you want to “shoot” unless it’s something super generic. I’m sure eventually you’ll be able to feed in a bunch of iPhone shots of a product you want to shoot and it will generate something close enough for some folks, but I don’t know… if I spent weeks or months of my time designing and building something to perfection, “close enough” wouldn’t cut it for me, but we’ll see how it progresses, I’m sure it will get there way faster than I think it will. But, being able to generate an environment that is close enough to drop a product shot into is pretty cool… light years ahead of searching for stock photos and obviously way faster than looking for a cave to shoot myself (although that would be a lot more fun). So for now, I still think I’ll have a job for a couple more days.

I’ve been a little busy building and running version 2.0 of @flash.sf but with all the discussion around AI lately I’ve decided to dip my toes in and share my take on it. The short version is that I’m slightly more excited than terrified. In it’s current form, AI is a really interesting and powerful tool to incorporate into your workflow. I know it’s evolving very quickly and it gets better and better every day, and as a tool I’m sure it will get even more useful; but after experimenting with some forms of it for these images, it is nowhere near ready to completely replace all of our jobs or the level of control you’re able to get on a real shoot that most commercial jobs require. It will absolutely change the industry, it will absolutely make some types of photography obsolete or at least no longer viable as a career, and I’m sure it will put some people out of work. I think the photographers that remain will need to be open minded, adapt to it, add it to their toolset and be willing to modify how they work and create, but I think there will still be a place for some of us. There have been so many versions of “well, this industry is dead” over the years. I think this will be the biggest change yet, but I think it also has so much potential. It’s not ready to replace us just yet, but it’s also not going away any time soon. Saying we should band together to protest and stop it is unrealistic. Your only options are to adapt with it or get left behind. *full disclosure – ChatGPT wrote this caption. (Not really). These are also not full ai renders, but using ai as a tool blended with practical photography. The first frame of the video is straight out of ai though, which is completely wild to me.
