IC and STI had the pleasure of hosting the Honorary Lecture of Professor Giovanni De Micheli, bringing together his former students who travelled from afar, as well as researchers and faculty members, to celebrate his pioneering research and academic excellence. 📚
Through his lecture, Carrying the Torch, Prof. De Micheli shared reflections on scientific collaboration, the evolution of technology, and the importance of passing knowledge on to future generations.
Thank you Nanni, for everything you have given us throughout your career to our students, to the scientific community, and to EPFL. ⚡️
How do molecular, genetic, whole body and organ-level scales, as well as external factors impact human health? 🧬
The CIFAR MacMillan Multiscale Human research program explored this question through interdisciplinary, collaborative sessions at their meeting in Whistler this week.
Program members also participated in rapid-fire 60-second presentations on their research, exchanged progress on collaborative catalyst projects with fellow program members and across CIFAR’s research programs and presented new breakthroughs in their work.

A robotic hand crawling on its own? Thing better watch out. 🧟♂️
Developed by EPFL’s Learning Algorithms and Systems Laboratory and the Computational Robot Design and Fabrication Lab,, this hand surpasses the limits of human dexterity. Its dual-thumb, reversible palm can even detach from its robotic arm to reach and grasp multiple objects.

When Building Better Cities podcast launched just over a year ago, we set out to explore how we design and deliver the infrastructure and buildings that shape our lives.
So this week, Kate is revisiting the very first episode of the podcast — a conversation with Dr. Andrew Sonta that explores the connection between the urban form and social cohesion. And, since the pod dropped, more studies have come out, showing something fascinating — and a little troubling. Even as our cities are built to enable connection, people are walking faster, lingering less, and spending less time in shared spaces.
It feels like the right moment to pause and reflect on why that’s happening — and what it means for the kind of cities we’re building. As we continue to talk about smart growth, density, and sustainability, it’s worth remembering that cities are also social ecosystems. The way we move through and experience them matters.
