1 year anniversary for The Third Gleam! My third Gleam with #theavettbrothers. Bob gave me some excellent vintage Elvis trading cards. I took a 1940’s Gates SA-50 console (SA-70’s and SA-94’s) for the majority of the preamps, along with some #capigear units. I nearly destroyed Seth’s KU-3A with a faulty mount. The usual drama and adventures. Link in our bio, on streaming platforms next week. ——————— This was a fun and challenging piece to capture, we started with a firm date and no location large enough for the need with little time to spare, and I unexpectedly became location scout, luckily @storyteller.sound had availability. First time I’ve ever had to book 10 chairs for a session! I thought I had enough SDC’s? Hahaha this is exactly the type of occurrence that fuels GAS. 12 SDC’s, an LDC, and a ribbon pair deployed for this, almost out of options. I particularly like the textures of Movement 2.

What’s been ours is now yours - our first studio album ‘Halfway To Nowhere’ is out NOW!! ✨ This album is the most special of everything we’ve ever written. It was an incredibly vulnerable writing & recording process. Each song collectively tells the story of us & our hearts deepest feelings over the course of these almost 8 years & counting that we’ve been together. Going into recording this album, we wanted it to be acoustic, stripped back, & raw. We knew EXACTLY who the man was for the job, but we knew it’d be a total long shot. We reached out to Doug Williams with @emrrecorders in Winston Salem, NC. He’s produced some of our favorite artists’ acoustic albums, & by the grace of God he responded immediately. We spent a beautiful weekend in North Carolina, went into the studio, sat across from each other, & sang/played these songs just as we’ve always done together in our living room. Which is what makes this record so special. We didn’t want to hide behind a big production. We wanted it to be simply us, our voices, our guitars, in the moment, start to finish, imperfections, raw emotions, & all. We want to express our deepest gratitude to Doug Williams for taking us on, & for beautifully capturing the essence of us. We ADORE you. It was an incredible honor to work with you. 🖤 To our dear friend, @haleysullivankeys , thank you immensely for saying yes to adding your unbelievable piano playing on this, & as always for absolutely blowing us away with your insane talent. It means the world to have you a part of this & we love you SO much. Wow, time flies….i found this home made gem around Y2K, used it a few years, modified it a few times, eventually sold it to @tommybogdon . Just back in for a tuneup 23 years after the last mod I did. Back then there was no easy way to check response and noise, best available was putting various tones in and measuring input and output voltage, drawing a plot. Now it’s easy to watch changes in real time. It’s now dialed in with a good 5dB more output headroom than it had, and a bit more top extension. The tubes are still strong after years of use. I don’t recall if they are the tubes that were in it originally, but they might be. The original circuit used grid leak bias on a pentode, no gain control, small amounts of local feedback, and headroom was low. Now it’s a more conventional cathode bias input, same local NFB, interstage gain pot. I did a couple things with NFB based input pads back then, doubt I would today. Love the hand engraved station branding with date and initials. I kinda wish everything I had in the studio was home made like this.
