When was the last time you heard your native language? How do you grapple with feelings of foreignness? How can you remember a part of yourself that has been lost to time?
Header/Footer Gallery presents “The Art of Disappearing,” a new virtual exhibition curated by Abigail Prakarsa (@abigail_prakarsa ).
“The Art of Disappearing” brings together artworks by Elaine Chao (@ebchao ), Joseph Morris (@emotivemachine ), and Nimrod Astarhan (@nimrodastarhan ). Through their work, this exhibition attempts to explore the concept of de-culturalization, the abandonment of culture, and what it truly means for someone to lose their heritage.

I rebuilt an old Bell Atlantic rotary phone and connected it to the USGS real-time earthquake feed.
It rings every time there’s an earthquake—each ring represents an order of magnitude.
Pickup to hear details about size, time, and location.

This piece translates real-time environmental data from New York Harbor into light. Tidal water levels determine the height of the illuminated surface, while wind conditions influence motion and texture. Subtle variations in light reflect changing environmental conditions.
Should have been a quick fix became a full rebuild.
Burned out the Pi, replaced it, recoded everything.
Landline pulls live earthquake data from the United States Geological Survey and converts it into rings you can answer.
Video of the working piece coming soon.

This was the scene at my studio today where a five alarm fire destroyed at least four floors of artist studios, water and fire destroyed another four, and the rest of us are waiting to understand the extent of our own loss. I’m not sure what, if anything of mine will be salvageable, but there are artists who lost every part of their practice, including years of priceless work in an instant. There’s a GoFundMe campaign if you would like to help the them recover: https://gofund.me/f826854be (link in bio)
I'm showing my work, Scintillator, in a group show at Westbeth next week!
