COVER REVEAL | Coming November 21st is a stunning album from Chicagoās Grant Park Music Festival Chorus.
Led by Christopher Bell, presents āSongs of the Seasonā ā a radiant collection of beloved carols and timeless choral works capturing the warmth and wonder of the holidays. Featuring Jesus Christ the Apple Tree, The Holly and the Ivy, Veni, Veni Emmanuel, and In the Bleak Midwinter, the album showcases the ensembleās signature blend of precision and expressive beauty. From the serenity of Silent Night and O Magnum Mysterium to the lively Fum, Fum, Fum and heartfelt Huron Carol and Wexford Carol, this recording celebrates the spirit, mystery, and joy of Christmas under Christopher Bellās masterful direction.
REVIEW | A master of the recital, Will Liverman has captured the attention of many over the last few years with his intimate recordings. Having made history in 2019 as the first-ever black Papageno at the Metropolitan Opera, many of Livermanās more recent offerings have paid tribute to black composers. For this album - and 2023ās Vol. 1 - the writing of Liverman himself is given the chance to shine.
Set to the poetry of late-19th/early-20th-century activists Paul Laurence Dunbar and Alice Moore Dunbar-Nelson, Livermanās ten original art songs arenāt written in a specific style so much as a response to the emotions of the words. There are hints of musical theatre, gospel, jazz and classical in nearly all of the tracks. Liverman is predominantly at the piano, joined by a tranche of other artists to provide a variety of interpretations.
Itās an album of two halves, the first centred in calm stillness and meditations, the second a series of impassioned anthems, each one packed with heightened emotion. The emotional weight of the closing anthems is somewhat diminished by the proximity of their intensity, but it nevertheless packs a punch.
The three-part A Threefold Heart stands out, a cyclic exploration of the arc of love. A whimsical opening gives way to a central movement inflected with jazz-inspired harmony - think Sondheimās Sunday in the Park with George - before an intimate, cello- accompanied final movement. - Freya Parr (@bbcmusicmag )
