Working Loose presents 𝑪𝒓𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝑪𝒍𝒖𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 Co-curated by Annika Earley + Em Gift April 1st – June 13th, 2026 Opening Reception: Friday, April 3rd 5pm - 7pm In the mid-1990s, Carl Sagan warned that modern society was drifting toward a second dark age. He argued that as our dependence on technology grew, our understanding of it would diminish and the sheer abundance of information would erode our sense of truth. In The Demon-Haunted World, Sagan imagined a culture that, unable or unwilling to think critically, would retreat into superstition—into demons, humours, and “crystal clutching.” When reasoning falters, he wrote, “the flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles. Darkness gathers. The demons begin to stir.” Today, that warning feels less prophetic than descriptive. AI-generated slop is promoted as the inevitable future of visual culture; cult remedies circulate as medical fact; truth collapses into opinion, algorithm, or just convenience. Answers are instant, outsourced, and frictionless—whether from a search engine, a feed, or a chatbot—while consumption continues uninterrupted, masking what has quietly disappeared: discernment, skepticism, and shared reality. Within this landscape, the eleven artists in 𝑪𝒓𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝑪𝒍𝒖𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 point back to the magic mirror to ask for clarification.  Like the mythic amphisbaena—facing forward and backward at once—the works in this exhibition inhabit a space containing past and present, reason and superstition, truth and fable.  The exhibition features works by @annikaearley @danasherwoodstudio @haleywoodtextiles @jennifercoates666 @jennyib @lindsay_s_montgomery @markdionstudio @giantdaughter @rmunce @sharimendelson and @staceyrozich 𝑪𝒓𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝑪𝒍𝒖𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 reflects upon the historical murk of the dark ages while refracting contemporary anxieties around belief, doubt, and the seductive pull of the fantastical. In doing so, these artists ask not what we know, but how we know, and what we are willing to believe when the light grows uncertain?

ART SUPPLY 🔵🟢🟡🔴 An Ephemeral Art Supply Shop + Show December 2025 – February 2026 This winter @workingloose presents ART SUPPLY and invites the community to step inside an inspired art supply shop created by and for artists. We asked a group of Maine artists to share lists of their most-used and most-loved studio materials, then sought to bring these treasures together into a one-of-a-kind, Artist-Driven Art Supply Shop. The result is not just an art store, but an immersive experience — a celebration of the materials that make art possible. Running from December 2025 through February 2026, the ART SUPPLY shop will be stocked with the essential materials that practicing Maine artists can’t live without — the paints, papers, brushes, snacks and tools that inspire their daily creative practice. A concurrent exhibition within the ART SUPPLY walls feature works by these contributing artists, showcasing how each uses their favorite materials in practice. It’s a tribute to both the material and the maker — and an invitation for visitors to find their own spark of inspiration to take home for the winter season. Contributing Artists Include: Avy Claire · Christopher Patch · Cynthia Winings · Eleanor Conover · Isabelle O’Donnell · Jill Hoy · Louise Sheldon · Megan Magill · Meg Hahn · Susan Steinbrock · Tessa Green O’Brien · Tyler Weeks Join us beginning December 6th at our 𝙃𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝘽𝙞𝙯𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙚 𝘽𝙖𝙯𝙖𝙖𝙧 alongside more than 17+ Maine makers for our Holiday market and come kick off the gift-giving season with an art-full bang! I always get a little weepy around my birthday. The week leading up to my birthday ”celebration of self”… I have been taking pretty seriously the opportunity to take stock as to where I am, came from, am going, what’s changing, what’s not, and makes me think about all the people I have loved and lost and turned away from or towards. I deeply appreciate annual markers like this that encourage introspection. I tend to just go, go, go, and sometimes need things like this to remind me to turn inward. This year I’m feeling particularly strong pangs of love and gratitude for all the support I have been receiving from friends old and new. Old buds finding eachother through art connections later in life, groups of friends connected by our shared love of animals and care-giving and creativity, and my seemingly larger and larger community of like-minded souls who have been game to support this very scary and exciting live/life/vocational jump into Working Loose. Not quite sure what the point of this little journal entry is, except to tell you all thank you for being my friend in this big scary and fucked up world. really, THANK YOU! oh, and if you wanna get me anything for my birthday, a hug would be great, or make a purchase @workingloose or scream my name really loud right now, or come visit me, OR I could also really use new underwear; natural fibers, french cut, size medium/large. Happy birthday to me on October 25th! 🥰

Dear friends, Some very exciting things are coming down the pipe for @workingloose !!! please take note! NEXT MONDAY October 6th @meg___farrell of @multiflorastudio will open up her ONE WEEK ONLY botanical time-based installation in the back gallery! She is gearing up to pack the gallery with a wildly imaginative floral installation 🌿 during the opening party (10/6 from 4-6pm) she will be flexing her photography skills and offering portraits in the “green room” Then… the next day on TUESDAY October 7th she will be hosting a Kokedama workshop and teach us how to make those eye-catching Japanese moss ball forms to grow and hang plants in, in style. (…and perfect moisture level might I add) Ar the end of the botanical show, and when the plants have had a week to shift and wilt, 🥀we then open up the shop to our first live music event of the fall! @jud.jude.judith @hamiltonbelk and @is_she_question_mark will be here to serenade us into the night on SATURDAY October 11th. the botanical show will serve as the backdrop to this thin-veiled evening and our gurl @streetweeper will be here to sing back up with Estelle too!! then a week of rest and reset in the gallery to prepare and hang the next big show: CHEWED PAPER!! a show that will be a bombastic ode to the incredible yet humble medium that is papier-mâche. The opening for this will be a PARTY October 18th from 4pm on…. tickets to the workshop and music are up on my website and I am VERY VERY excited that the gathering-of-friends-season begins again after a long and busy summer! See you soon??!!
