100 Candleholders draws inspiration from JB’s 1981 exhibition 100 Plates Plus, where he playfully expanded a prolific form. Here, each artist brings a distinct approach to material, process, and the interplay between aesthetics and function. 100 Candleholders is on view at Blunk Space through March 28.

"Lately I've been reconnecting with chess and have been making small sculptures based on the traditional pieces. This work is inspired by the shapes found in the queen and castle."

"This work is carved White Poplar, felled by tree surgeons in North London. Hand shaped and polished to a natural sheen, it is designed to sit on the floor or tabletop. The oversized base delicately twists and tapers into its second life as a candleholder."

"...A lot of how I work and what I make comes from the relations and connections of ways of making, commercial to found to wild and the reuse of it all making networks that lessen extractive processes. It is far better to light a candle than to curse the darkness."

"We visit Kehoe Beach at low tide; walk down to the rocky end. Let the dog loose, and inspect three dozen small granite stones; take home a few. Think deeply about location of candles on chosen stone."
