Help us conduct COSPLAY SCIENCE as part of @csirogram ON Prime. Are you interested in SUSTAINABILITY AND COMMUNITY BUILDING in COSPLAY AND COSTUMING in AUSTRALIA and LUTRUWITA/TASMANIA? Join the Dressing UP team, lead by cosplayer Dr Emerald L King ([email protected]), and have your say. During the nine week ON Prime program, we will be learning how customer feedback can translate our research into real-world impact. Interviews will be conducted by members of the Dressing UP team - four gender studies, media studies, Philosophy, Japanese, and popular culture scholars at University of Tasmania. We are a team of nuerodivergent, queer, and gender-diverse nerds who love cosplay and popular culture. Over the next nine weeks, we need to conduct OVER 100 conversations with cosplayers, photographers, creators, and makers, JUST LIKE YOU!

Call for Participants: We are seeking members of the gender-diverse community (ie, anyone not cisgender) to participate in a study investigating how gender-bending anime and manga are viewed and engaged with by the gender-diverse community. We are seeking Australian participants over the age of 18 who identify as gender-diverse to take part in online interviews. All data will be anonymised. Today, I got to spend the early afternoon with the fabulous @alexandria_burnham and @nategothard at the Australia Japan Society-Tasmania Inc and @universityoftasmania HASS/Politics Media & Languages "Swallow" event. "Swallow" tells the story of William Swallow, who escaped Van Diemans land, was the first contact between Australia and Japan, and after whom Pirate's Bay is named (based on an earlier escapade! I learnt so much today!!). It's the first part of a trilogy from @westwordsws @westwords_books , and the next book tells of his adventures in Japan during the time of sakoku/closed borders. I don't know who mentioned costumes (it may have been me??), but I'm thrilled that people dressed on theme, and that both Ally and Nate played dress ups too! Thank you to @ashleyremminga and @syaa.liesch for helping with the event (is it still "pressgang"ing if you agree to it??). We made The Forest look suitably fabulous. Ice cream from @murestasmania seemed like the perfect ending! Swipe for my outfit featuring Fearne's blue jacket, about 4 belly dancing skirts, and many kilos of scarves and bangles. The swallow broach was my great great grandmother's, and obviously, I had to wear my Danish Designs swallow and blossom necklace!

From Van Diemen’s Land to Japan: The Tale of William Swallow When: 16 May 2026 12:30 PM, AEST Where: Room 2038, The Forest, University of Tasmania, Brisbane Street, Hobart, TAS 7000 .au/event-6688940 Ticket price includes catered lunch, author talk and q and a, pirate and nautical dress encouraged! Best dressed will be awarded a copy of the novel by the author. In this joint event with the University of Tasmania, author Alexandria Burnham will discuss the story behind the novel. Offering insights into the process of writing historical fiction, she will also read from the archival documents that informed the novel’s development. This will be followed by a Q&A session. The novel Swallow is based on the true story of a Tasmanian convict and his encounter with samurai from Japan's Awa Domain. Following a mutiny at Recherche Bay in August 1829, William Swallow took command of the brig Cyprus. Along with his fellow convicts he then embarked on a remarkable adventure across the Pacific Ocean, with the Cyprus becoming the first recorded visit by an Australian ship to Japan. Participants are encouraged to dress in their finest pirate or nautical dress. The best costume, as chosen by the author herself, will receive a free copy of the novel. It's far too early to be awake, much less at an airport (my Virgin email told me to be at the airport a whole hour earlier than Air NZ counters open!), but I can't stop thinking about @cosplayforyoucomp and the thing that we just achieved. I realised as we passed the turn-off to Manukau that I have to have some Kiwi cosplay cred after having been at that one Manukaugeddon that one time ... So, when I was in Wellington at the start of 2025 for Wellington Cosplay Photo Festival, @spicythaidesign asked me to drop by Wētā for a coffee and a chat. We had a good catch up and started planning a possible cosplay comp that was all about what cosplayers could do, with as few limitations as was (safely) possible. I wrote the first draft of the rules and event on the bus back into Te Aro. We had the first of many calls with @gridleybyvictoria after I got back to Australia, and she and I gently bullied Sanit into letting us name the whole thing "Cosplay For You" after his book. We had a wish list of partners and sponsors (but what if Wētā Workshop sponsored us with trophies? But what if we could get Lumin's Workshop to give us goody bags so we could get their products in front of Kiwi cosplayers? But what if ....), and I'm still pinching myself at the amazing people who supported our little event. Everyone has given Cosplay For You so much love - from each instagram like to each of our incredible 29 entrants, and our final 14 competitors (and our amazing swings who were willing to jump in if we needed them ♡ you are incredible) - it would not have gotten off the ground without you all. You can tell from these pictures taken by Jo @redscarf__ , moments before we ran on stage to the Xena x Mario party mix (written and covered by my WCS partner, Amy @cat_lady_amy ) that we had a damned fine time. We talked about doing judges costumes for ages, but nothing stuck until someone mentioned Mario Brothers and I begged Sanit and Vic to make it Xena ... I think this is my first mash-up character? Return of the unicorn sprinkle cake topping. Why, yes, the cupcake craze of the mid to late 00s did fundamentally change me. These are my UNIcOrN Sparkle Red Velvet cupcakes for a work morning tea with the Vice Chancellor and Pro Vice Chancellor. In the words of @wilstracke , cupcakes never did nothing for no one, but these were a subtle (and delicious) protest as @nteu_tas continues bargaining for a decent wage, safe workloads, protection against AI for research, teaching, and administration, and reproductive and gender health leave. (Greens box mix with extra cream cheese in the frosting and a rich berry mix through the cake ... not that you could taste it over the SUGAR and FOOD COLOUR for that proper purple colour 💜)
