UTAS union members are planning a half-day work stoppage this week for fair pay. Across the country we are winning better wages, and Tasmanian staff should not be left behind or forced to choose between fair pay and job stability.

NTEU members continue industrial action, Chief of People tells us a 3% wage increase is appropriate for Tasmanians and the NTEU tables our counter offer for a wage increase.
This is the week just gone in bargaining. Watch to find out more.

Enterprise bargaining picks up again today and this week's meetings are more important than ever. Following on from industrial action, will UTAS present a truly better wage offer and support fair workloads and AI regulations?
During Tuesday's work stoppage, our HASS staff in Hobart had some clear messages for our VC.
BETTER UNIVERSITIES PAY THEIR STAFF BETTER
STUDENTS DEMAND ACTION FROM THE VICE CHANCELLOR
VALUE TASSIE'S ONLY UNIVERSITY
We couldn't agree more...

The latest @togatus_ mag is out and it’s a great read as always. This issue includes a feature on the NTEU’s industrial action. UTAS Chief People Officer, Kristen Derbyshire, claims that UTAS’ 3% wage increase offer is an “appropriate pay rise in a Tasmanian context” and has expressed her disappointment in the strikes.
CPI in Hobart is currently 0.5 higher than the national average and with just 0.3% rental capacity it’s now more expensive to rent a house in Hobart than it is Melbourne. That is the Tasmanian context. Probably not an issue for the VCs who are earning close to double the Prime Minister’s salary...
This is also the first we are hearing of UTAS working on a better offer. We look forward to seeing what that is at the bargaining table tomorrow.
We again thank Togatus and the student body for their interest and solidarity during industrial action. And if you’re wondering how the NTEU has handled our VC’s appointment with Deloitte, check out our reels and deep dives into the issue.

🛑UTAS ALL CAMPUS WORK STOPPAGE🛑
Today, NTEU members across all UTAS campuses stopped work for one hour to drum in the message to senior management that we WILL NOT SETTLE for poorer pay and conditions in our next staff agreement.
We mapped out ways to escalate our future industrial action should UTAS not come to the bargaining table with a better offer and members made it clear that inequity within our workplace is deeply felt. Our VC's salary could cover roughly TEN full time positions for entry level researchers 💵💵💵. How are these exorbitant salaries in the best interest of our state's one university?

These pics from last week's work stoppage were taken by one of our brilliant organisers, Alex. Alex is also responsible for our Simpsons themed posters, which clearly show UTAS staff as being the lowest paid higher education workers in the country.
UTAS' latest pay offer keeps most staff at the absolute bottom, while our VC is in the top ten Australian VC earners. And that's just one reason why industrial action is continuing across our campuses this week.

Industrial action THANK YOU. It’s been a huge week for NTEU Tas. Thank you to our members and broader community for a week of solidarity and union power. UTAS has seen the member turn out to industrial action, they’ve felt our absence, and now they must listen.
Further photos to come, and updates once bargaining recommences next week.

UTAS must provide staff with better pay and conditions in the next staff agreement. Our state’s future in research depends on it.
Some more photos from the 2-hour work stoppage in Hobart/nipaluna earlier this week. These excellent snaps taken by local doco photographer Phil Bohle. One even looks best in NTEU purple!

“It’s workers who bear the cost, it’s workers who do the fighting, it’s workers who are killed, it’s workers whose families are torn apart and it’s workers who are displaced. And that’s why it’s such a shameful act for our Prime Minister to support that bombing.”
Dr Damien Cahill, NTEU General Secretary, joined unions rallying outside the US consulate in Sydney this week to say no to Trump’s war on workers. Peace is union business.
🛑ALL CAMPUS UTAS STOP WORK MAY 12🛑
On Tuesday, NTEU members across all UTAS campuses will be stopping work from 1-2PM and meeting online (via Zoom).
This online meet will allow for full solidarity across campuses (including Cradle Coast and Rozelle). It will provide the opportunity for members to discuss the recent in-person stoppages, our next move in the fight for a better EBA, and why it’s advantageous to back Tuesday/Wednesday up with an all campus stoppage before we head back to bargaining next week.
QR codes and Zoom links will be circulated to members today and Monday. A room will also be booked in Sandy Bay for those down south who want to meet in person.
We do not take work stoppages lightly. And neither does management (they are having immediate impact). Before joining online, be sure to use the purple NTEU background for maximum visual effect.

💜 NTEU POWER in Launceston/kanamaluka at yesterday’s UTAS work stoppage.
A special shout out to our comrades who came out in the north to take a stand against degrading conditions, declining pay and AI interference.
The NTEU takes work stoppages seriously. Stopping work means a loss of pay and while the energy from the past two days has shown just how much union power is within our university, what we’d rather see is UTAS come back to the bargaining table with a pay offer that keeps up with inflation, sustainable workload models for all staff, and guardrails around AI.
We’ll be back tomorrow with further updates around our path forward in bargaining.

“Our members voted overwhelmingly to take action because they have been patient long enough. The University has had every opportunity to put a fair offer on the table and has chosen not to. That decision has consequences.” — Dr Ruth Barton, Division Secretary, NTEU Tasmania
Hundreds of staff at UTAS - Tasmania’s only university - went on strike this week, coming together at Launceston and Hobart campuses to demand fair pay and conditions.
