Project: Natural House - Lister Road, London
We can't get enough of exposed ceiling joists in our projects; an easy win to bring a greater sense of height and give more visual interest by breaking up the mass of a large white plastered ceiling, as well as providing lots more character to a new space that might otherwise feel a little clinical.
We like to couple this with areas of flat ceiling for practical things like rooflights and recessed downlights, creating an opportunity to explore visual alignments and play with light.
For this project we used oak beams and soffit boards with a white oil finish to create a greater sense of warmth and enclosure within this beautifully lofty extension.

A small garden to provide the setting for this compact multifunctional studio sensitively designed by EJ Studios and installed by Oko Pod.
Garden materials form a colour wash in warm, earthy tones creating a calm and cohesive material pallet. Layered planting (seen here freshly planted in early spring) will bring movement, texture and seasonality, softening the architecture and blurring the boundaries between garden and studio.
Table and chairs from ‘The Masie’ adds a lush, luminescent pop of green, sitting comfortably in the garden.

Project: Mortimer Road, Clifton
EJ Studio was set the design challenge of reconfiguring this sprawling former student flat into a contemporary, open plan home, fit for the social and working needs of a busy, young professional couple.
A large open plan kitchen-living-dining room was created, making the most of the high ceilings and period features. Full height glazed doors connect the living room to a striking modern garden designed by @tranquilolandscapes
Two new timber extensions clad in Siberian larch house an additional bedroom/study and bathroom, and a small home gym.
The two generous bedrooms at the front of the flat have been reconfigured to integrate an ensuite to both and inbuilt storage. The hallway has been opened up, with new integrated joinery.

Stanley Yard: New Build Project
It’s been a long old patient wait, but we’re so excited to have been granted Planning Permission for a new self-build family home in Redland, Bristol!
A second build project with @tim___freeman , and just in time before our most important personal project arrives…
The house will sit on a currently vacant, end of terrace site, positioned behind a tall stone wall on land which was once a family owned yard space.
The new house will be spread over 3 floors, with open plan living space on the ground floor and external space in the form of small courtyard gardens at front and back.

The Old Pottery project was featured in @idealhomeuk back in July in their Small Space special. It was fantastic to share more about the process of getting this project built and how we made the most of this unusually constrained site to create a light-filled, space efficient, sustainable home.
This project was an incredible opportunity to carry out a full house design from start to finish, bringing together many technical building challenges, as well as indulging in all the interior finishes.

A slight diversion away from the serious business of architecture & interiors! 🤍 It’s been an amazing few months planning the most magical of celebrations with @tim___freeman
It was a day full of embracing the elements, soaking up bubbles & views of Dartmoor, leading a procession of our nearest & dearest down from a craggy tor and up into ancient woodlands, bathing in the sounds of a 1920’s swing band along an old abandoned railway line, and afterwards partying the afternoon & evening away in our neighbours gem of a rustic barn which we transformed into the cosiest of candle-lit settings.
