For the March issue of The Brooklyn Rail, Kathy Butterly spoke with EJ Hauser about her exhibitions High Vibration at James Cohan Gallery and Assume Yes at the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery in Saratoga Springs. It is one in a long line of exchanges between the two artists, who describe themselves in turn as “a sculptor who paints” (Hauser) and “a painter who sculpts” (Butterly). They have found parallels in their fascination with color—where and how it is located and remembered—and a shared emphasis on listening: to the Lot Radio, to NTS, to their artworks. Here they discuss the trajectory of Butterly’s practice, finding beauty in reality and destruction, and the artist’s newfound mantra in art and life: “see me now.” 🔗 Read the full interview via link in bio. 📸: Cover of Brooklyn Rail, March 2026. Mt. Etna, 2025, 16 x 20 inches, oil and acrylic on canvas. - - - - - - - I am delighted to have the above painting included in, "In Celebration of Shadows," @grimmgallery opening this Friday and curated by @ian.hartshorne and invited by @anthonycudahy The exhibition presents a selection of artworks by 27 artists; Anthony Cudahy, EJ Hauser, Jennifer Leigh Blaine, Julie Curtiss, Pat Andrea, Larysa Myers, Louise Giovanelli, Ian Hartshorne, Isobel Shore, Jo McGonigal, Ian Kiaer, Jack Ginno, Christopher Orr, Derrick Guild, Ross Chisholm, Daniel Richter, Werner Büttner, Alexander Basil, Matthias Weischer, Wolfram Ebersbach, Kristina Schuldt, Chloe Wise, Stephen Appleby-Barr, Aude Verbrugge, Sophie von Hellermann, Dieter Krieg, and Jule Bode. - - - - - - - 'In Celebration of Shadows' celebrates the intergenerational impact of teaching painting and reveals engaging and dynamic relationships between those participating. The title of the show honors a group of contemporary artists whilst acknowledging their mentors, and the artists they have in turn had an affect upon. We can think of these often overlooked, yet crucial contributors to the lifeblood of art as 'shadows'. The curator takes an unusual approach to not invite all the artists who are included in the show personally. Instead, nine artists were initially invited to submit one work each with the proviso that they in turn each invite two accompanying guests to exhibit alongside them; one of whom a former teacher, accompanied by a chosen student. The request to those invited was to reflect on the interests and relationships formed during their teaching and learning periods and extend invitations to others. The show runs through March 7, 2026. *The last photo is of the epic MFA seminar I led at Hunter College in 2018 where I met Anthony Cudahy and many other magic humans! Thank you Anthony ❤️

New painting by EJ Hauser in Hi-Dose, a group show in collaboration with artists Roxanne Jackson and Tamara Gonzales, now open at The Pit, Los Angeles! The exhibition will be on view from August 23 - October 11, 2025. For more information email us at [email protected] ----- EJ Hauser’s paintings are both graphic and open to interpretation, teetering between iconography and something familiar but abstract. This imagery shifts between omnivorous references both ancient and current — the paintings are mysterious talismans, employing buzzing pallets and marks that dance. Stuttering lines form a visual code like musical notes, which coalesce with atmospheric layers to create ineffable messages. ----- The exhibition includes works by David Altmejd, Polly Apfelbaum, Gina Beavers, Melissa Brown, Kari Cholnoky, Erik Frydenborg, Tamara Gonzales, Joanne Greenbaum, Bendix Harms, EJ Hauser, Roxanne Jackson, Robin Kang, Caroline Larsen, Guadalupe Maravilla, Chris Martin, Sana Musasama, Ruby Neri, Liz Nielsen, Heidi Norton, Bruce Pearson, Vincent Pocsik, Allison Schulnik, Michelle Segre, Jim Shaw, Lauren Silberman, Cammie Staros, Michael Thorpe, Fred Tomaselli, Marnie Weber, and Nicole Wittenberg. ~ Sprung from the forehead of Athena (and Tamara Gonzales and Roxanne Jackson) ~ “Get strong with bare feet on the ground and with everything that is born from it. Get smarter every day by listening to your intuition, looking at the world with the eye of your forehead…always remember: you are the medicine.” María Sabina, Mazatec curandera and poet from Oaxaca, Mexico (1894-1985) #EJHauser Sasha’s Lab, 2025 Oil on canvas 20 x 16 in Photography by Chris Hanke
