Ethiopia, by name.
We didn’t find ALO Coffee on a sourcing trip. We found them through a conversation that wouldn’t end.
Tamiru Tasesse had a thesis most exporters wouldn’t bother defending: that every washing station in Ethiopia carries a fingerprint — not just of altitude or variety, but of the people who pick, sort, and dry that cherry every single day. Not “Sidama.” Not “Guji.” But Bacha. Bona. Doramo. Faficho. Each name, a community. Each community, a cup that belongs to no one else.
That conviction matched ours. EIGHTY PLUS was built to give roasters across Southeast Asia access to coffees that tell the truth about where they come from. When we met ALO, the alignment was immediate — and the partnership became one of the most important in our portfolio.
Here’s what that looks like in the cup:
☕ Sidama Bacha Natural G1 — Whole cherry dried at 2,100 MASL. Blackcurrant, ripe peach, wild honey. A natural with uncommon depth that holds its character even through darker profiles.
☕ Sidama Bona Washed G1 — Pulped within 12 hours, fermented 36–48 hours, spring-water washed. Citrus blossom, bergamot, white peach. Precision clarity from the Sidama highlands.
☕ Sidama Doramo Washed G1 — Higher elevation than Bona, longer fermentation from cooler temps. Bergamot, lemon verbena, jasmine tea. Sidama at full expressive range.
☕ Sidama Faficho Washed G1 — The highest station in the ALO Sidama lineup, 2,200+ MASL. Green tea, lime zest, stone fruit. Delicate, measured, persistently complex.
Four washing stations across the Sidama highlands. One natural, three washed — each from a different altitude band, a different community, a different expression of what this zone is capable of. Not interchangeable. Not blendable. Named, because they earned it.
All lots available now through EIGHTY PLUS.

Eugenoides: The Species Before the Species
Every arabica coffee on earth exists because of eugenoides. Around 10,000 years ago, Coffea eugenoides crossed naturally with Coffea canephora in the highlands of East Africa. The result was Coffea arabica. Eugenoides is not a trend or an engineered cultivar. It is a biological ancestor.
What makes it remarkable in the cup is what it lacks. Arabica typically contains around 1.2% caffeine; eugenoides carries just 0.2–0.4%. Caffeine is a bitter alkaloid, so removing most of it changes everything. The result is a cup defined almost entirely by sweetness — caramel, vanilla, white peach — with virtually no bitterness and minimal acidity. The body is light and silky. This is not a roasting trick or a fermentation effect. It is genetics.
The challenge is growing it. Eugenoides is a wild diploid with half the chromosomes of arabica. It yields far less, ripens unpredictably, and resists standardization. Inmaculada Coffee in Colombia was among the first to cultivate it commercially. Luiz Paulo of Fazenda Santuário Sul sourced his seed stock directly from Inmaculada and planted it in Carmo de Minas at 1,200–1,350 meters — a region already known for producing some of Brazil’s finest lots.
The processing choice matters. Natural dark room drying eliminates UV exposure and temperature swings, slowing sugar breakdown in the cherry. For a species whose identity rests on sweetness, this is not aesthetic. It is technical — preserving exactly what makes eugenoides different from everything else.
Santuário Sul operates as a research site, not a conventional estate. This lot, selected on-farm during the August 2025 harvest, tests a specific thesis: that Brazilian terroir can express a species most associate only with Colombia or East Africa.
Drinking eugenoides is tasting the raw material that made arabica possible.
