Das Werk wurde 1724 in Leipzig uraufgeführt und gehört zu den eindringlichsten Vertonungen der Passionsgeschichte. Nach der Matthäus-Passion im Vorjahr setzte Erl die Reihe fort und gestaltete die Osterzeit erneut mit einem großen geistlichen Werk von Bach.
