The restitution lab is designed to engage the community in a discussion about restitution, rehabilitation and reparations arising from the colonial rule which was imposed after the British attacked the various communities that make up present day Nigeria. The massacre of our people, the imposition of foreign customs through colonialism and the fracturing of families and our society in general.
The looting of artifacts and call for their return has heightened and is yielding some results.
Sadly today we have our people being trafficked for sex, drugs, organ harvesting and modern day economic slavery.
Can this present day scourge be linked to the events before, during and after colonialism? What has happened to the taboos, customs and tradition of our people that regulated our society for thousands of years? What can be done in your opinion to right these wrongs? What practical steps can be taken to bring about healing and rediscovery of who we are? Can our present form of education, governance, customs and traditions help to restore the harmony of our society?
Also what does the return of the Benin Artifacts and others mean to our people? Considering that these objects were made for keeping history, religious purposes and for utility purposes? What can be demanded from our traducers to right this wrong and bring about healing of this historic trauma??
