Hyper-Figuration is now live at the 1-54 Contemporary Art Fair New York 2026. Featuring works by Deborah Segun, Soji Adesina, and Afeez Onakoya.
Hyper Figuration assembles the practices of these artists to examine an intensified mode of figuration; one in which scale, proportion, and colour are deliberately amplified to communicate emotional and psychological resonance. Here, the figure moves beyond representation, becoming an active site through which identity, perception, and interiority are negotiated.
It was a pleasure welcoming our VIP guests to the booth. We look forward to welcoming everyone throughout the weekend.

Hyper-Figuration | 1’54 Contemporary Art Fair 13 - 17 May 2026, New York. Featuring works by Afeez Onakoya, Deborah Segun and Soji Adesina.
Together, these three artists demonstrate how figuration can be intensified without losing subtlety. Hyper-Figuration here is not about spectacle; it is about focus. By amplifying specific elements shape, colour, contour, structure they open pathways for deeper reading and emotional engagement. In their hands, distortion becomes truth, and the figure becomes a vessel for layered narratives within contemporary African art.
We look forward to welcoming you.

🎥 Artist Spotlight: Soji Adesina—inside the studio 🎥
Presented at 1-54 New York 2026, the Nigerian-British multidisciplinary artist works across painting, film, and photography, shaping a practice grounded in experimentation and material inquiry.
Within his studio, his work is characterised by an experimental approach to material and colour, where abstraction, metaphor, and narrative intersect to engage questions of identity, culture, globalisation, and migration, while reflecting on broader dialogues around tradition, modernity, and the African experience. His process is intuitive yet deliberate. The studio becomes a site of reflection and construction—where recurring motifs, including solitary figures and vividly rendered skin tones, serve to question representation and presence.
He has exhibited internationally, including at AKAA Paris (2023), São Paulo Arte (2023), Making Face (Rele Gallery, Lagos, 2024–2025), Black Figuration Is Alive and Well (O’DA Art Gallery, Lagos, 2025), Marks of Our Future Past (O’DA Art Gallery, Lagos, 2025), and Pangea (New York, 2025).

Magadlela’s subject matter oscillates between articulations of personal experiences of womanhood and motherhood and narratives stemming from the fraught history of black South Africans. Her oeuvre engages in an ongoing dialogue regarding the colonisation of black bodies and women, a theme that is particularly resonant in her use of materials with a capitalist character, a pertinent consideration in an era where commodification is increasingly relevant.

Crossing Cultures - Turiya Magadlela
Turiya Magadlela, a South African artist born in Johannesburg in 1978, employs art-making techniques historically associated with women, utilising sewing and embroidery on a range of conceptually charged fabrics, from pantyhose to correctional service uniforms. These materials are transformed into abstract compositions through cutting, stitching, folding, and stretching, ultimately affixed to wooden frames.
Magadlela has garnered significant attention both nationally and internationally, including the presentation of a solo exhibition at The Armory Show in New York City in 2017, as well as participating in numerous group exhibitions such as Blue Black, curated by Glenn Ligon at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation; Simple Passion, Complex Vision: The Darryl Atwell Collection at the Gantt Centre; The Past is Present at Jack Shainmann Gallery; and Blackness in Abstraction at Pace Gallery. In recognition of her exceptional talent.Magadlela was awarded the prestigious FNB Art Prize in 2015. Her academic background includes study at the University of Johannesburg and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam.
