We’re excited for our next exhibition! Join us for the opening on Friday 13th March, 6-9pm Hotel Kittiwake+ Stakeholder Lounge is a discursive space and showcase bringing together those affected by ecological compensation in the North Sea. The project responds to the artificial nesting towers installed in Lowestoft, Suffolk as compensatory habitats for seabird populations affected by offshore wind development. Known locally as “Kittiwake Hotels,” these structures were built by energy companies as a condition of expanding wind farms further out in the North Sea. @edcompson and @arieh.eh ’s ongoing project ‘Hotel Kittiwake+’ collates how ecological compensation looks in practice, and asks what could happen if wider oceanic entities could input into design. In this Stakeholder Lounge, the hotels are approached as ecological and cultural architecture that arise from a decision-making process around responsibility, repair, coexistence, and ultimately profitability. Presented by Doggerland Windustries, a 12,000 year old design consultancy and energy provider. The exhibition will be open 12-6pm Mon-Thurs until 27th March, with additional special dates and meet-the-artists moments to be announced!

Installation shots of 'The New Scroby Sands Offshore Wind Farm Information Centre' - closing tomorrow 7th June @eastgallery_norwichuni 💫 --- An exhibition that looks at the relationship between offshore wind energy and Doggerland, the submerged landmass that used to connect the UK to mainland Europe. Fully submerged around 8000 years ago, Doggerland was a place of human inhabitation and settlement. It is an area now understood through proxies: through seabed scanning and filming, sediment sampling, the finding or trawling of artefact. Offshore wind turbines are literally embedded in the same Doggerland earth – massive swathes of data arrive from scans taken for undersea cable routes that transfer energy from offshore wind farms in the middle of the North Sea to the shore. Presenting a mix of collected and adapted material from marine archaeological research and wind energy construction, The New Scroby Sands Offshore Wind Farm Information Centre positions the North Sea as a discursive site, informed by a looping, cyclical time; a nonlinear poetics of the sea. --- More information and documentation can be found at aphoticdepths.xyz 💧 Installation view images by @denisailie

A few extracts from The New Scroby Sands Offshore Wind Farm Information Centre, closing this Saturday at East Gallery, Norwich. Prints akin to information boards, audio, and films combine recordings and imagery sourced throughout our fellowship from across the Norfolk Broads, the wider UK and the North Sea, and include infrastructural sites, sediment analysis, and punctuations of the occasional animated fiction.  Screens thanks to @kitto.rent / @kitmapper ! Part of our show 𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓝𝓮𝔀 𝓢𝓬𝓻𝓸𝓫𝔂 𝓢𝓪𝓷𝓭𝓼 𝓞𝓯𝓯𝓼𝓱𝓸𝓻𝓮 𝓦𝓲𝓷𝓭 𝓕𝓪𝓻𝓶 𝓘𝓷𝓯𝓸𝓻𝓶𝓪𝓽𝓲𝓸𝓷 𝓒𝓮𝓷𝓽𝓻𝓮 sit sections of wind turbine blades of two different, composite designs, identical to the ones currently operating on the North Sea. Inside one plays a film panning the seabed of Brown Bank, a former site of human settlement before its submersion, recorded last summer by the Submerged Landscape Centre. A voiceover reads entries from surveys detailing anomalies on the seabed beside wind farms, informed by sonar scans. Washed with Ed’s dad’s power washer. Our exhibition ‘The New Scroby Sands Offshore Wind Farm Information Centre’ opens next Thursday 13th March at East Gallery in Norwich, come! The exhibition follows a year’s research into the meeting of contemporary offshore wind turbines with the geological history of Doggerland, the submerged landmass that used to connect the UK to mainland Europe. We have been looking at the contemporary understanding of Doggerland as a land that comes back into being through data, often sourced from scans for undersea cable routes that transfer energy from offshore wind sites in the middle of the North Sea to the shore. The exhibition positions the site of the North Sea as a discursive one, informed by a looping, cyclical time; a nonlinear poetics of the sea. Thanks to @claireamyallerton @candicealli and many more… Also very excited to include this work as part of ‘A World of Water’ at the Sainsbury Centre from next Friday 14th too, thanks to @printcolonial and all at @sainsburycentre Both shows are on for a few months so let us know if you’d like us to show you around 🛶 East Gallery is open Tues-Fri 12-5 & Sat 12-4 @norwichuniarts @eastgallery_norwichuni
