When
@currincy asked us to be part of an upcoming compilation to benefit
@belovedasheville @_roar_wnc @cfwnc we only had a couple days to give him an unreleased song. What we had lying around wasn’t in any shape to be rehabilitated.
@joshuapatrickcarpenter lives in Marshall, just a few houses away from where the river flooded the main street, and he had no power or internet. We weren’t sure how with
@finn_cohen being in Raleigh we could pull a new song together without being able to trade files quickly.
@eclaywhite put Joshua in touch with
@lukelukem , whose
@outthererecordingstudio had power. He offered the space, and Joshua headed up there with
@juliekodell and
@beccaleighmusic 24 hours later. Julie and Becca put a gorgeous bed of vocals down over the drums and guitar that Joshua tracked, and Clay laid down some triumphant flugelhorn. The lights were flickering occasionally as they worked.
A day later Finn got a mix of the tracks and borrowed an amp from
@mykoalas that had a necessary vibe. He spent much of a day figuring out how to add anything that could possibly be in the same league as the folks who had already contributed to the track — who were in the middle of a natural disaster, who were experiencing something he wasn’t fully able to comprehend.
It took a few mixes once Josh got power, but he still had to drive up to Clay’s house to send the files to Finn, so decisions had to be made in real time. A day later
@djmllr did a light mastering pass.
The song is called “Monuments” and it made at least one person who was involved with it cry when they finally heard it.
This was a true community experience. To be a small part of a larger NC community is humbling. Thank you
@currincy @rodeo_walrus @newcommute for making all of this happen.
