There is a reason this dumpling has been celebrated for over a century... 🥟 Plate 7 of our #8platesofchinatown series features Tao Tao Ju’s xiao long bao (aka soup dumpling).
Born in Nan Xiang, Shanghai, in the late 19th century, the xiao long bao was a stroke of culinary genius. By adding aspic (gelatinised pork stock) to the minced pork filling, the soup forms inside the dumpling as it steams, creating that burst of hot broth inside every xiao long bao.
At Tao Tao Ju, every one is freshly crafted and steamed to order, honouring the culinary traditions that made this dish legendary.

Is there anything more comforting than a steaming bowl of Laksa? 🍜 Plate 5 of our #8platesofchinatown series is C&R Cafe’s Singapore Laksa.
Born from Peranakan culture, Singapore laksa is a rich, coconut milk broth loaded with rice noodles, prawns, tofu puff and fragrant spices. A dish that sits at the crossroads of Malay, Chinese and Indonesian influence.
The owner of C&R Cafe hails from Johor, the southernmost tip of Malaysia, right on the border with Singapore. Although C&R Cafe is a Malaysian restaurant, that shared history and heritage is felt in their bestseller.

Beware these buns are addictive! Plate 3 of our #8platesofchinatown series is @8unhouse ’s iconic custard bun.
This viral Cantonese liu sha bao (custard bun) originated in Guangzhou, China, but was popularised in the early 2000s in Hong Kong. Soft, pillowy dough wrapped around a molten core of salted egg yolk, butter and custard that flows the moment you pull it apart. Sweet, salty, creamy and completely irresistable.

This is a dish with centuries of history behind it, a cornerstone of Hong Kong siu mei (Cantonese roast meat) culture, the roast duck at Four Seasons is everything it should be. Crispy skin, tender meat, rich umami depth and with that signature sweet soy and hoisin sauce tying it all together.
