URBEXCELSIS — @nicolelizee @salle.bourgie “This is both a love song and a dirge. It is born from urban exploration (urbex), from wandering through buildings whose walls hum with forgotten voices, whose floors are mottled with moss and stains that hint at the people who lived there. The structures tell their stories in the fractured stone - jagged like a broken bone - and beams eaten away by rot. Sometimes, rusted machinery lies abandoned; remnants of an attempted rebuilding. The pulse is hauntological - blurred spectres… the reverberation of misremembered folklore…pareidolia forming faces in the grain of timber and stains of oxidized oil. There’s a scent of burnt wires and outmoded devices in the air that warns of the unsafeness of this place. It is the musty weight of forgotten spaces swollen with dank asbestos. The music mirrors the decay - tattered and torn - as though scavenging lost melodies from the debris. Lyrically, the song is stitched from shards of Latin musical terms fused with the language of urbex. Latin surfaces only in fragments for me; half-remembered intonations from ritualistic, trance-like Catholic Mass, and fleeting refrains from gothic, psychological, and supernatural horror films of the 1960s through the early 1980s, sometimes slipping into pseudo-Latin: Rosemary’s Baby, The Exorcist. It’s an homage to letting your mind and senses play tricks on you; to finding patterns in the chaos, feeling what isn’t there, seeing faces in the stains on old wallpaper or hearing chants in the silence and, in the end, singing along with them.” — album notes from Nicole Lizée Urbexcelsis was created with the support of the @canada.council and @salle.bourgie as a co-commission.
