Up-and-coming Naarm trio @dumbheadhere will issue their sophomore self-titled EP on vinyl for the first time, via Impressed Recordings.
Hot off the tail of a support tour for US experimental heavy hitters Water From your Eyes, and an analogous local support last year for fellow Naarm project Acopia, this release is not to be missed.
The EP, released last year, garnered praise from around Australia, with Beat Magazine claiming “Dumbhead are redefining what triphop can be” and Fashion Journal writing “You never forget who you’re listening to when you put on their tracks, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll want more”.
Their self-deprecating name fails to obscure the deep sophistication of their sound, drawing on a wide range of influences, including but not limited to legacy trip hop acts Massive Attack and Portishead. However, the band names Joanna Newsom, Pixies and Esperanza Spalding as influences, revealing an extensive artistic diet that produces their singular sound.
Dumbhead is a self-recorded release slowly built over the two years since the band’s debut EP. Sophisticated electronic instrumentation is kept in check by Billie Raffety’s intimate vocal performances, as soaring delayed guitar and the occasional trumpet create an expansive sonic landscape.
The EP is available for the first time on Bone Marble Vinyl with an individually numbered OBI strip, limited to 100 copies available only through Impressed.
Pre-order now for April 23rd release.
You might want to run a hot bath before watching this week's Feature Video from Naarm-based trio Dumbhead.
‘White Knuckles’ songwriter Billie Raffety hadn’t considered that the filming of its music video would end in being drenched in 15 litres of lube and paint, naked, in an abandoned house somewhere far out east of Melbourne… But that's just what happens when you team up with director Finn Morris. Right? They explain “it was the sort of idea you probably shouldn’t ask an actor to do without a generous budget to soften the proposition, so naturally the experience stayed in-house.”
“The video for ‘White Knuckles’ began as a seed formed by Finn and [bandmate] Maayan - a duo whose creative partnership I deeply respect and hold a great deal of love for. Zach and I arrived after many of the early developments had already unfolded, mostly with an “alright then, let’s do this properly” attitude… I hadn’t been part of something like this before. It made me think young artists are possibly the most dangerous people to give imagination to - in the best sense. The concept kept shedding its skin as it came into being. Each day it became something slightly more unruly, more alive. We had to let go of expectations, comfort zones, and the need to fully control the outcome.”
“From the jump, black and white was pitched as the backbone of the video” says director Finn. “Maayan came to me with references from German Expressionist-inspired videos, including Hijack by A$AP Rocky. I had also recently seen Wings of Desire and Dune: Part Two, both of which harness black and white as a stylised tool in completely different ways. In particular, Dune’s use of infrared cameras. I’m a massive nerd and when I first saw those scenes I immediately started digging into how they were achieved.”
