Our second mix for @skylab_radio can be listened to online. It’s a radi(hagi)ography about Brigid: Saint of Kildare and pagan goddess. We devoted this episode to Brigid because 1) her timely status as the goddess of spring and all the rebirth it entails; and 2) because Brigid is said, in Irish mythology, to have started the traditional Gaelic/Celtic lament, Keening (the singing of tears) when her son Ruadán was killed in the second battle of Moytura. We recently lost a young lad who was very dear to us, and so this show is our lament to the memory of Harper.
the program includes such Gaelic/Celtic musical traditions as Keening (both funeral lament & heard in the voices of Sinead O’Connor & Enya); Sean-nós (‘old style’ spoken word); Irish Drone (Uillean Pipers, Crónán); and the broader influence of Irish music (folk revival, Breton harp, Appalachian folksong, raga, etc).
