I haven’t made a post about the new
@cheertheband album and I’ve wanted to for a while so here goes:
Writing, recording and releasing Pure Mass Detection is one of the proudest achievements I’ve ever made. I’ve made a handful of albums in my time as a musician and more often than not I look back at the finished result and am not as stoked as I hoped to be. But this album feels different; I didn’t tire of it as we tracked it laboriously ourselves, I didn’t tire of it as we worked on mixes with
@chris.dadge and as the release date crept closer, all I could think was how excited I was for people to finally be able to hear it. Now, a few months out from that release and I’m still as excited and proud of the album.
The record was a culmination of years of learning and trying ideas and sharpening our individual skills as a band.
@whatistheplan has always been a terrific composer and the songs he wrote that are on the album are absolutely chocked full of highlights. They are masterpieces of rhythm, melody and structure and being able to contribute to them being realized by the band is a great gift.
@i3.l.t also brought years of honed songwriting to his contributions and similarly it is a thrill to be have the opportunity to make music with a brother I’ve known so long.
@etown.jpeg may not have written any songs but his playing is foundational and absolutely essential to the music. Ethan immediately rose to the challenge of playing complex music and his skill and companionship have divided the band eras as Before Ethan and After Ethan. For my part, I contributed songs, production and a lot of harmonies.
Everyone’s playing is outstanding. Cheer has constantly pushed the limits of our musical ability and there are moments across the album that resonate every single time. We captured these songs at what felt like the height of their lifespans and our ability to perform them and Every Single Listen reminds me of just how good of shape we were in at the time.
The artwork by
@wizzardboi brought the soundscape to beautiful visual fruition and
@jayarner provided a beautiful mastering job. I could go on but I’ve hit the character limit so LISTEN TO IT 👋
